Description What a fool he was! Toleskr was so filled with confidence that it blinded him to all the things that should have been obvious from the start! If he had only planned more carefully! His furious thoughts seemed distant and far away within his mind, as exhaustion pulsated through his body, while the adrenaline slowly subsided. He continued to pant for breath, willing his emotions and thoughts away as they were doing him no good now. He had to focus. He-…
A small white feather fluttered down from above just as a shadow loomed over the dwarf nyulop. With his mind still a mess from the whole ordeal he had gone through, Toleskr blankly glanced over his shoulder. With his heart still beating so hard, all he could hear was his blood thundering in his ears… and not the approach of a ferocious predator. There, towering above him, was a Razor Quill Bird. It glared down at him with a sharp piercing stare, causing the lucky nyulops blood to run cold.
In less then a heartbeat, Toleskr turned and bolted into the trees with a speed he never knew he had. He could hear the beastly bird screeching and charging after him, but he dared not look back. He couldn’t even feel the earth beneath his paws as they flew beneath him, carrying him deeper into the woods. Fear burned through every fiber of his being, hotter than the burning muscles of his limbs. He had to get away! That massive monster would be able to swallow him in a single bite!
Running on instincts, Toleskr began to weave through the forest, choosing paths with more narrow gaps in the trees. He ran and ran until it felt like there was nothing else in the world. He then felt his foreleg smash against a large jutting root, and he somersaulted through the air before crashing into a large bush.
Everything was spinning, and his pulse spiked higher with panic, but… nothing happened. Toleskr held his breath and strained his ears. Nothing. He lost it! He let out a gasp for air, as relief flooded his body. He couldn’t believe it. He had somehow gotten away. Though… perhaps he shouldn’t stick around. It may still find him. Yet those fears seemed lost to him as darkness claimed his consciousness. He was just far too tired. The adrenaline, the fear, the exertion… it was all too much. He passed out.
A snapping of branches jolted Toleskr out of his sleep and he felt fear lift his fur on end as he reflexively sunk deeper into the bush that he had passed out in. He tucked his tail against his stomach and folded up his wings as tightly as he could. The light glowing from his tail tip and wings would surely give him away! He shuddered as the sounds of an approaching creature drew nearer. Bipedal from the sounds of it. It was that Razor Quill Bird, without a doubt.
How long was he out for? It was so dark in the forest he couldn’t tell, and he was too terrified to find out. He felt as if he couldn’t move even if he wanted to. His body was stiff and heavy, as if turned to stone. All the flying and running and stress had done a number on him. Now what could he do?
Toleskr could hear the thing getting closer. Did it know how to track? Did it scent out its quarry? Somehow, he couldn’t remember a thing from his studying or the lessons he was taught. Was this the end for him? It was nearly on top of him now…
A sharp black beak stabbed through the leaves, narrowly missing him. With a squeal of terror, he scrambled away. His flailing claws sunk into bark, and he was instantly clambering up the trunk of a tree. Before he knew it, he was staring down at the Razor Quill Bird as it furiously screamed up at him. He was panting for breath, his throat felt raw, and every single one of his limbs was shaking. He collapsed on the branch with a groan. It was then that he was aware of a sharp pain on his tail. Weakly he raised his tail and head to look at the cause. There was deep crimson blood staining almost the full length of his tail, but he was too drained to feel even a flicker of concern. He simply laid back down and let the darkness of sleep take a hold of him once more.
The small nyulop would worry about everything when he woke up. He would wrap and bind his injuries with the bandages… that were in the bag he had left behind. Toleskr let out a low sound of frustration mingled in with despair, as sleep finally stole him away for the second time. Not even the risk of falling from the tree or being snapped up by the frightening fowl could keep him awake right now.
...

I did the initial sketch on paper first, though everything else was done on my tablet, including a redo sketch of the first headshot. I like how a lot of it turned out... my background still needs work, but I'm getting there. I'm not really happy with the big shot of the Razor Quill, but it was my first attempt, so I guess I can cut myself some slack. Oh! And for the running Razor Quill I actually looked up running ostriches so I could get the body position and the legs just right (it looks much better then it did before). Look how small Toleskr is! In truth I probably should have made him just a touch smaller, but then he'd be even harder to see then he already is.
