I used to play this game as a part of the Super Mario All Stars + Super Mario World SNES ... collection ... thing ... we used to have when we were little. I only ever actually beat the game once. Super Mario World was much more fun.
Also Phantos were scary. Picking up and carrying that key was an act of courage for my 7 year old self.
