Story
As they climbed higher up the mountain trail, the temperature cooled quickly and drastically. Only a few hours into their climb, Reid found himself reaching for a jacket, and not long after that, Rain had dug out winter coats. Snow began falling delicately at some point. Several inches covered the trail now and piles a few feet deep lay just outside of the path. Reid shivered and tugged his jacket closer, calling on his magic to try to warm himself up. Kat had one of his heavier coats on now. While she hadn't complained about the cold, Reid could tell that she was uncomfortable. Her shoulders were too tense, her grip on Skyline's reins too tight.
Katia's medicines had worked wonders on the horses in just the few short hours since they had applied them. Skyline's hindquarters seemed less inflamed, and the wounds already appeared to be healing and becoming smaller as the skin knit itself back together. Reid estimated the injury would be nearly entirely healed by the next day. Aro still wasn't moving as easily as he usually did, but he was now able to keep pace with the rest of the group without them slowing down. Rain still rode Kurios to be safe, but Kat was confident that Aro would be back to normal and able to return to his normal activity levels by the end of the week.
The larger Toko, who Rain had taken to calling Harley, had grown more bold the longer he followed them. He trotted pleasantly behind Zyra and Vausk now, his attention rarely straying from Laulik as he went. There were times when he would fall back in his distraction or move too close to the Zhorukas. Zyra would growl if he ever got too close. So far, Reid hadn't noticed anything more defensive than that. The deeper the snow got, the more Zyra and Vausk followed a shorter distance away. They trotted easily only a couple dozen feet away from them.
Reid also noticed that the colder the weather grew, the more stiff Zyra seemed. She was more irritable than usual and would snap at Vausk if he accidentally brushed up against her. Niklaus had warned him that while the two were raised together since cubs, Zyra still would growl and snap at him at times. She only tolerated so much, and even Niklaus had admitted that he had little trust in her at times.
A low growl rumbled behind Reid, the volume increasing until it became a dull roar. Reid turned in cyclone's saddle to shout at Zyra to stop when she pivoted and snapped at Harley. Her teeth sunk into his thick mane, long strands of fur getting caught in her teeth. Harley leaped back. He roared in response, the sound echoing off of the mountains around him. Kurios and Skyline startled, and Reid accidentally jerked back on the reins too hard in surprise.
Beizel nearly fell off Blaster's saddle. "What the shit was that?" she asked once she found her balance, fingers tangled in the mare's mane.
Rain opened her mouth to respond, but the sound died in her throat as her eyes widened, gaze locked far above Beizel's head. "Run," she said. She shook her head and kicked Kurios into motion. "Run!"
Confused, Reid looked behind him. Then he heard the quiet rumble coming from the mountain above them. Enormous sheets of snow broke away and tumbled down the slope, knocking off more chunks as it rushed by. Soon the quiet rumble became deafening Katia punched Reid in the arm as she and Skyline raced past him.
"Come on!" she shouted as she crouched further over Skyline's back.
A panicked look crossed Beizel's face as she glanced at Reid. "I can't ride that fast," she screeched. "I'll fall off and die." She pulled at her hair. "Trampled to death by horses and suffocated by frozen water is not how I want to go."
"We have to go! Just hang on tight" Reid tugged on Blaster's halter and coaxed them along with him as he slowly picked up speed.
They needed to find shelter. Reid couldn't remember what to do in case of an avalanche. He couldn't remember ever even hearing about what to do. There were no snow capped mountains where he came from or where he lived now. Snow had never been an issue before, and now he found himself in complete terror. All he could do was run for his life.
tL;Dr: It was time to take a break from climbing mountains and Harley boofed a bit too hard and now everything is on fire collapsing
