Amp running is a competitive high-speed footrace that has gained popularity equal to regular vehicle racing. Runners can reach speeds of over 1,000 mph.

The components:
Amp running consists of 2 parts: the racer, known as the pilot, and the suit, known as the amp rig.
Rigs are all-encompassing, lightly armored suits designed to dramatically increase the speed of the pilot and their resistance to the g-forces such speeds create. All suits have boosters on them which are activated on the 2nd lap or leg of the race. Most are situated on the elbows, heels, or shoulders. They have a limited amount of energy which can be recharged while running over a power plate. Rigs can also gain speed boosts from overclock panels. These panels grant an increased performance boost for a limited time after being stepped on.

The rules:
Amp running is overseen by the Intergalactic Amp Running Association(IARA). General rules of conduct during a race prohibit runners from violently interfering with each other. This has not completely eliminated foul play from happening as not all parts of race tracks are monitored by cameras. Should a runner suffer serious rig damage or become incapacitated, a drone is dispatched to retrieve them.
Originally a humans-only sport, more species have been included over time. Bipedal is still the only allowed pilot type, but discussions for starting a separate league for quadrupeds and other multi-limbed species have begun.

The rig:
Each suit is fully sealed and grants the pilot a HUD displaying the track, current position, lap/segment number, and position of other pilots.
Inertial dampeners are for countering the intense g-forces exerted on the rig and pilot.
Interior climate control is for regulating the pilot's body heat for comfort as some tracks do go through very cold and hot environments.
Weak grav-shift generators keep the gravity around the pilot focused on down being towards the feet. This allows the pilot to transition between regular gravity and wall and ceiling running with minimal discomfort.
A comlink to the support crew is crucial for staying informed about the state of the race and the rig. The crew monitors the rig's condition and power during the race. They also advise the pilot on tactics and how the rig is functioning.

The pilot:
While the rig enhances the pilot's skills, the pilot still needs to be in good physical form as the rig is quite heavy. Endurance, strength, and quick reflexes are the qualities all pilots should possess. Prior history as an athlete is considered a good start in becoming an amp runner

Track styles:
Amp run tracks are incredibly varied. They can be simple flat runs or complex knots that wrap around themselves. Most that incorporate steep vertical surfaces, loops, or vertically perpendicular segments have artificial gravity generators in them to allow runners a smooth transition between regular gravity and the warped track. Overclock panels and power plates are mandatory fixtures. Most are circuits where the race takes place in laps. Others are long stretches from one point to another with varied segments.
