Description
EDIT: Right, fixed some minor bugs and added more health and checkpoints. The fixed version can be found here:mega.nz/#!T9V1iYDB!DyLZ7jdz6y8…
This is why you test your games before release...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So, for the past year, I have been working on and off on a game, and finally it is done. It's pretty short and pretty simple, but it's got plenty of squashing in it (Though it's all pixel art. Art is not my strong point.) And it can be downloaded right here:
Old Version: mega.nz/#!WxdRXDjL!AVx8x6UFYKG…
Controls:
X = Shoot and advance dialogue
Z = Jump
Arrow Keys = Movement
Esc = Return to the main menu
Alt + Enter = Fullscreen
I hope you all enjoy it. Content-wise it's similar to my works, so if you enjoy those, you should enjoy this, but I was teaching myself programming while making this, so I apologise in advance for the inevitable bugs you will come across. I also plan to continue making games, and have already started on my next one, which will involve my very unlucky weasel sheriff character Texas, getting in trouble as always. If you run into any serious issues while playing the game let me know and I'll try to fix those, but keep in mind I'm quite new to this.
Thanks!
Sorry about that... The stampede could really have used some more fine-tuning. All I can really offer is to say keep at it, and you'll get through eventually.
Incredible game! After I walked into the first enemy my accident, I quickly grasped onto the calamities that would be following later. This game is really fun by itself, but even more fun with the lose animations. I've been going through the game over and over just to find more of the end game animations and I love them. Also great job on the sound effects. I always found it so hard to find squishing sounds that aren't of mud sloshing or blood squirting, but these are those true cartoony sounds you have here. From exploring the game I think I've found all animation. Even the ones that may have been less obvious to find. But I counted 12 end game screens from the rest of the game and 3 from the final boss.
All in all, the game is great and paced well and has an excellent theme. For an improvement, I found the jumps to be a bit clunky only when jumping to something almost of equal height to my jump, and for gravity to be a bit faster. I was really panicking in the T-rex chase lol. I of course hope there will be more and am glad to hear you're in the process of another game. Thank you for giving this out for download!
No problem! I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it! There's certainly a lot of stuff I could have improved upon, but hopefully that will just make the next game even better. As for game overs, you're missing a few. There are 5 game overs for the final boss, 3 for the T-Rex, and 13 for the rest of the game! Good luck!
I played through the entire 1.0 version last night and I really enjoyed it. The failure animations are quite funny and varied. I had fun purposely putting Samantha in harms way just to see all of the goofy animations.
The game is pretty fun itself. Some of those "surprise deaths", while a bit cheap, were really funny when they happened. I like the first appearance of the flying dinosaurs in particular. That one really caught me off guard and made me laugh.
I will say that the challenge has a bit of a bell curve though. The game starts easy, then gets really hard in the center (particularly at the volcano stage), and then gets easy at the village stage in the end. I was purposely running into enemies at the final stages just to see what would happen.
Oh and I was a little disappointed with the "falling in lava" animation. I was kind of hoping for something funny, like Sam jumping out of the lava with her butt on fire, but maybe that might have been a bit much to animate.
But those are just minor nitpick. I had a lot of fun playing this. It's well made, has a lot of fun gags, and is really fun to play. You did a very good job with this one!
Oh! And I really like how you made the Game Over screen a "repeating replay" of Sam's final failure. That's a really nice touch.
All in all, I really enjoyed this and I'm totally looking forwards to replaying this and trying to find all of the failure animations. I'm sure that there have to be a few special ones that you've snuck in that take some experimenting to get. I look forward to it.
Good job!
Thanks! And yeah, sorry about the cheap deaths I'll need to watch out for those next time. As for the animations, such as the lava, originally I had much loftier goals, then had to severely scale it back, as this was really the first time I've ever done any pixel art, so I was a little out of my depth. And I can only really think of one failure animation you might have missed. It's the only one to have a game-over screen different to the on-screen failure.
But thanks again!
jontoon In reply to SquashedFlat [2017-02-08 04:28:13 +0000 UTC]
Nah. Don't worry about the cheap deaths. Like I said, they were funny.
Completely understandable with the lava. Gotta pace yourself since this is the first time making a game.
Is the different one the one where you fall through a pit at the bottom of the screen? I saw that one! It made me laugh!
Damn! This is very impressive! Fantastic job on it! You got a good sense of level design and I like how some things were shown to me via stage design instead of being told. There are few "Leaps of faith" in this that I didn't like and make me feel like I was cheated. You say your not an artist but I thought you did great with what you had and if you wanna do some more squash based games in the future I would love to do some animations for you.
SquashedFlat In reply to Kazecat [2017-02-08 02:54:36 +0000 UTC]
Oh wow! Thank you so much! There are definitely some flaws in the level design that I should have fixed, but by this point I mostly just wanted the game done so I could work on my next one. As for the offer of animations, that's very, very generous of you, though for now I might stick to doing my own stuff. Your art is leagues better than mine (I've been playing your mugen work all morning, and those butt-slams Jumbo does are absolutely phenomenal, as is the look of Jiggly flattened beneath him), but I want to get better and the only way I can is through practise. That being said, if you ever have an idea for a game in the future, we could always collaborate on something. I'd be happy to handle the programming side of things.
I like that final boss a lot she's pretty intimidating and sexy while being so. You definitely can program so I look forward to more demo's from you.
The level design is well done but there are still some cheap bits where i'm not sure where to go. Like on the stampede part I listen for the audio cues to know when to go but if I'm too high up I have no idea where to go. Maybe something simple to help so peeps don't get too frustrated on that part would help.
As for the offer yeah, keep me in touch I like your ideas and if you wanted someone to animate some of them I'd be willing to try. That may save you a ton of time. The fact that you can code and you did this solo is so tremendously impressive.
SquashedFlat In reply to Kazecat [2017-02-08 09:25:38 +0000 UTC]
The final boss was originally just gonna be a scaled-up pig, but I decided that would be kinda lazy of me, so I went with the brontosaurus instead. I actually used one of your characters for reference. And yeah, level design's really where the game falls down. Sorry about that.
But thanks again for the offer! I think it goes without saying that I've been a fan of yours for a long time, so it means a lot. If you like I can show you what I've got done on the next game, but it's really not a lot. Two enemies and some basic mechanics.
ShadowMaleRenamon In reply to ??? [2017-02-07 14:29:39 +0000 UTC]
I will say a lot of this is very, very good, but there is one major problem designwise, and that's there's a lot a blind jump. The engine you're using doesn't allow the player to see much ahead or below them, so I woulv be a bit careful when having any part of going down (the volcano was intensely frustrating as you'd just drop into lava).
But otherwise everything else is fantastic.
SquashedFlat In reply to ShadowMaleRenamon [2017-02-07 19:57:28 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, that's partly the engine, and mostly just me being bad at design. But I'm glad you enjoyed the rest of it!
ShadowMaleRenamon In reply to SquashedFlat [2017-02-08 01:50:17 +0000 UTC]
Honestly, just three things to keep in min:
1. Don't design downward, aim to stay flat or up as much as possible.
2. Off-screen projectiles should be avoided
3. Don't put a power up next to a cliff that actually goes nowhere XD
