Description
Jake turned his attention to Spud, who was still sitting silently on the floor in front of the cash register, absently playing with the empty juice box in his hands.
Jake came over and sat down beside him. “Thanks, Spud. It really means a lot.”
Spud shrugged. “I mean, yeah, sure, I’d do anything to help.” His shoulders slumped, and he fiddled with the straw in his juice box. “The truth is I’ve been feeling kind of useless all night.”
“Useless?” Jake repeated. “Why?”
“Well, you flew us back to the city, Trixie helped Dr. Chiron…” Spud trailed off and looked at the Band-Aid in the ditch of his elbow. “I’m just glad I was finally able to contribute in some way that mattered.”
Jake put his hand on Spud’s shoulder. “You did plenty,” he assured his friend. “Even before the transfusion. Your knowledge of potions helped get us out of that place; I never would’ve trusted any potion the Huntsman gave me, without some proof it wasn’t a trick.”
