Made a post about this before, but in summary: I was doing research on the specific types of animals I believed influenced the designs of Sonic-characters. I found the species, "Jackson Chameleons" which nicely fit the appearance of Epsio the chameleon. Upon further inspection, I found that this species has sexual dimorphism, so that the male chameleons have 3 horns, while female ones can have 1 to 3 horns.

At first I just considered the design to be a simplification, but comparing it to Amy- who had a drastic redesign- and she's capable of sprouting some extra tuffs on her head, it would've made sense to give Espio some extra horns. (you'll see it in some of my older redesigns of Espio, I used to give him extra horns because I wanted extra detail and less simplification.)

But after redesigning him to have 3 horns (which was really easy, as a his chameleon head shape is made for it.) I thought, "hey what if he's just.. trans? or something."

So here we are.

PS: I have just learned that his color isn't directly purple, but rather a very nice magenta. Also, his previous design (from the chaotix game) had green spikes instead of black ones- which blend in nicely with his color palette.
