Description

The city had been the scene of 5 major offences and counter offences. The population abandoned it at the start of the second, and what stragglers that remained were gone by end of the third round of firebombing. By the time of the 5th counter offence, it was a mound of ruins and smouldering ashes, an archaeological tell, and it was barely possible to tell anyone had ever lived there. At the dawn of this campaign sappers climbed through the thick brambles of twisted steel bars and crumbling masonry like so many ants on the hill, gathering and depositing caches of supplies and shoring up the crumbling buildings to make paths for those who would follow. Through their thick masks the scenes were dim, claustrophobic. Inhuman. Rarely did they ever meet any of the others, sometimes they did, and no bullets were fired. They each reasoned there would be plenty of time for that later, once the soldiers arrived.
