please fav if you find the tutorial helpful as a rating system.[link]
*generating .hdr file is possible by photomatix itself also, however i prefer photoshop, cause i think it gives a more efficient result.

well all I'd do is take the different exposures, develop them normally, and then throw them onto a CD. Nothing special. It'd be pretty much the same thing.

Thank you for writing this.
I have not found anyone, or anywhere else that an HDR tutorial or anything to do with HDR that is explained as well as this. Finally...someone who REALLY shows how it's done.

Very nice, to the point and simple although can't you tone map in CS2?
π: 0 β©: 1
srpsrds In reply to jddarkdeath [2007-05-12 07:18:17 +0000 UTC]
you can, this is just one way of doing it.. however i dont think you can use the detail enhancer mode for tone mapping in photoshop.. at least i have never come across.. so ive told my way..

francescovilla In reply to ??? [2007-05-08 07:44:32 +0000 UTC]
Lol, this result is NOT hdr
Why people want to call it HDR? Maybe it's trendy... can someone explain me please?
Take a look at "Valencia 03" in my gallery, that IS true hdr.
This is only a "paint effect".
Shooting with 9 different exposires is useless as this is 99% tone mapping.

The High Dynamic Range (HDR) "Landscape" Photography Tutorial
π: 0 β©: 0
srpsrds In reply to francescovilla [2007-05-08 11:18:07 +0000 UTC]
well to talk about something you dont know is not acceptable..
hdr is high dynamic range, and by using high dynamic range you can get all the shadows, highlights, reflections and light differences on an image.. saying this is a paint effect, gives me the sense that you are just a starter photoshop guy.. "valencia 03" in your gallery is hdr, thats true, but it is not the only way to use hdr, as i guess you have read on some websites on the net.. hdr is used in architecture photography to eliminate the reflections on the windows and stuff to obtain the dynamic range human eye sees.. which refers to the high "dynamic range".. hdr is used as a detail enhancer to create a special and surreal effect..
as to reply to your last sentence.. shooting with 9 different exposures is useless, i wish you didnt say this.. a jpeg file is 8bit, raw files are 16 bit.. and they both are not enough for having the maximum detail on an image.. thats why shooting several shots of one place and merging them in hdr gives you 32 bit or 48 bit images, which means that you have nearly all the detail and exposure ranges on that place, and you get as i said in the beginning, all the shadows, highlights, details, reflections and it goes on..

francescovilla In reply to srpsrds [2007-05-08 13:45:04 +0000 UTC]
Do you know what I know? Don't say that I'm talking about something I don't know...
The "9 exposure" sentence was about the effect you've obtained here: I've seen the same result with just one exposure and a massive use of PhotoMatix.
And this is not, imho, HDR. This is a particular effect obtained with HDR tecnique, but the result is very different. There's no colors, there's no depth... it's all grey. I'm sure that this is not the scene you were looking at while shooting.
Btw, I said "paint effect" using the -> " <- symbol (I don't know its name) because your image reminds me of a picture.
The point is that HDR is a tecnique used to bypass the exposure range limitations of digital cameras. This allows to produce images that are close to what your eyes see: details in shadows, midtones and highlights, but the colors must be preserved, along with a realistic final result.
Your tutorial is about the same tecnique, but goes in another direction, and it's not photographic HDR direction.

srpsrds In reply to francescovilla [2007-05-08 14:43:17 +0000 UTC]
well the point you are stuck in is that there is not only one result to obtain with hdr photography.. what you are talking about is the most common use of hdr merging in digital photography and yes the reason that this is done is that digital cameras can not achieve the dynamic range of the human eye.. however, hdr is not a photography category nor a photographic era.. hdr is a technique, and by using this technique it is your imagination to achieve whatever you want, and whatever you want to create.. you may have seen the same result with only one image and good use of photomatix, but if you get the chance try to look at the two examples printed in large sizes, and if you have the capability you will get that two images look very different.. just as you can get the same result of, the "true hdr" as you call from only one raw file, if you know how..
the point of your message is obvious if it was to warn someone about a wrong usage of technique, you may have noted me or reported to deviantart.. obviously, your intend was to criticise someones job without the technical knowledge or any kindness..
my last advice is, dont be narrowminded about the technologies and opportunities that digital world brings to you.. the advantage is to explore as much as you can, not stick to something and follow only one thing..
π: 0 β©: 1
francescovilla In reply to srpsrds [2007-05-08 18:24:15 +0000 UTC]
You look at the technique and see what you can obtain from it, I search for a precise result and look which technique can lead me there. I have the final image in my mind and I search the way to obtain it.
You say: "obviously, your intend was to criticise someones job without the technical knowledge"... I repeat: you don't know anything about me, so I simply don't accept words like that.
Anyway, you're right: I have been rude with you in my first message, I'm sorry.
