I assume the X series will remain on Nintendo systems for its next iteration. At least, Namco-Bandai and Sega seem to be extremely close to Nintendo, but I cannot say of Capcom. In fact, there are quite a few gamers who'd like Konami or Square-Enix to join Capcom, Sega, and Namco-Bandai, which would seem like a horrific experience for Legal. lol
Additionally, Namco-Bandai, Square-Enix, and Koei-Tecmo ought to band together, if not in an X game, simply because they're technically two companies each merged fairly recently and founded a couple decades ago.

Not really anything new in a sense. Mario's race against Pac-Man in the Mario Kart Arcade games, Sonic's met Megaman in the Archie comics, and Mario and Sonic competed in the Olympics. Only ones we haven't see together is Megaman and Pac-man, and Sonic and Pac-Man. I can't wait for this game.

Honestly the only 2 that haven't been together in something I think is Mario and Megaman. Pac-man has met Megaman in Street Fighter X Tekken, and Pac-man and Sonic were both in Wreck-It Ralph, both were at the party in the beginning of the movie.

Well, Mega Man (though, the BBA one) met Pac-Man in Street Fighter X Tekken, and Pac-Man and Sonic met in Wreck-It Ralph.. they both were at the 30th anniversary of Fix-It Felix Jr. Before Smash, Mega Man and Mario had adventures in the the Mario/Nintendo comics too.

Multiple series of comics were released in early 80's until the end of 90's.. most with short stories by issue, hardly following chapters as the comics nowadays, but was nice seeing some crossovers there.. Like Banjo & Kazooie, Conker, Bomberman, Mega Man, Kid Clown, Chun-Li, Zangief and lot of other third party characters with Nintendo characters (and consequently, the Super Smash Bros. cast).
