T-Rex Trix, Naturalis Biodiversity Center, Leiden, The Netherlands

Meet Trix,

Trix was excavated from her rocky grave in Montana, USA in 2013 by a coloboration between a team from the Naturalis Biodiversity center in Leiden, the Netherlands and a team from the Black Hills Institute.

In order to obtain the 5 million Euro's for buying the fossil and shipping it to the Netherlands, Naturalis organized a fund-raiser titled "Tientje voor T-Rex" (Ten bucks for T-Rex) where visitors could donate a minimum of 10 euro's for the purchase and shipping of Trix. From November 17th 2013 to December 20th 2014, Naturalis managed obtain the funds.

Trix can be visited from Septermber 10th 2016 untill June 2017 before being on display in the renewed museum at the end of 2018. Because I work at Naturalis, I was allowed to see it much earlier (September 6th) and even though I was allowed to take photo's of Trix, I wasn't allowed to publish these photo's online until today (September 9th).

Interesting facts about Trix:

- Trix is in the top 3 of best preserved T-Rex fossils, consisting over 80% of her original remains. The bones showed barely any signs of compression and were beautifully preserved.
- Trix was around 42 feet long and weighed around 5 - 6 tons when it was still alive and lived over 66 million years ago in the late Cretaceous period in what is now Montana, USA.
- Trix died around the age of 30 years, making her one of the oldest T-Rexes ever found.
- Trix had quite a rough life evident by the injuries found in her skeleton which includes an infection in her muzzle that eaten away a little bit of bone matter, a bite wound in her lower jaw, a couple of broken ribs and broken tail vertebrea, which all healed in her life time, proving that the cause of death was most likely of old age.
