This is gonna sound werid, but as a child I always loves exploring when it snowed. It was so quiet and intersting......and then I would pretend I was on a snowy adventure in my mind.
I imagine Rigar does the same, and Nausicaä is playing along since its fun. Nausicaä who is in the tree is the explorer who has sumbled on the beast's lands....who is Rigar.
Note: they are wearing winter gear cause its super cold where I am and thought it would also look werid without it.
