Description Well here she is! Meet Megan, the original human in Equestria!

This here is my design for both the “younger” and “older” versions of Megan that will be appearing in the comic series I have planned, based on this wonderful fanfiction. www.fimfiction.net/story/71660…

I feel like my ability to illustrate human expressions leaves a bit to be desired. This is still a learning curve for me. Expect me to improve as the comic progresses. (Humans are also MUCH harder to draw than ponies, I’m now remembering...)

This is one of three human character sheets that I will be producing before getting into the comic proper. I have two more ones like this on the way; one for Danny and one for Molly. It shouldn’t be “too” much longer... I originally told myself that I would have all three done before posting them, but I just don’t have that kind of patience it seems.

It has always been my passion to “ground” these kinds of fantasy scenarios with a sense of physical plausibility. Hence, my mild attempts at making the pony just a little bit more anatomically accurate, and perhaps a little more similar to the original G1 style.

I expect I’ll get a few complaints about the size and weight that I chose for the standard pony. Many people seem to think of the G4 ponies as being the size of large dogs, and maybe weighing no more than a human, if even that much. My thoughts on the matter were that the ponies NEED to be large enough for a nearly grown human to be able to ride them (Both older Megan and Danny do so in the story), so the ponies’ shoulders (withers) needed to be as high as an adult human’s waist, in order for it to seem like they can be realistically ridden. This makes them about the size of a Shetland pony (look them up), which weigh in at about 450 lbs. Since I figure these fantasy ponies have a somewhat lighter and more gracile build than the more heavy-set Shetland ponies of the real world, and since a third of them are pegasi and need to be able to FLY, I arbitrarily shaved about 150 lbs off that. Hence, the choice of 300 lbs. That’s for female ponies. Perhaps male Equestrian ponies would actually weigh 450lbs, like a Shetland pony....

I also referenced an actual stature and weight percentile growth chart, to ensure that my choices for height and weight for both younger and older versions of Megan were realistic, and what could be considered healthy. The one I used for Megan and Molly, obviously, was the chart tailored for girls. sta.sh/027l7a1guola I referenced a boys’ growth chart for Danny. sta.sh/0153am30wfx6

Anyway, I hope you like what you see so far. Any and all constructive criticism is always welcome.

IMHO, That fanfic is horrible. Try the Elements of Harmony and the Savior of Worlds instead.

That story is WAY too long.

If I were to illustrate a different G1/G4 crossover, I would sooner go for History Repeats, but I still like Demon Slayer better, overall.

Hey there.

Good on you for writing a G1/G4 crossover, regardless.  I can't actually speak to how good of a job you did, as I have not actually read it.

All I meant was that your story is way too long for me to ever consider illustrating it, as my task would never be finished.  XD

I can see on Fimfiction that you are continuing to update your story.  Good luck to you.

Thanks, and no problem. It is a bit of a doorstopper. It's a great illustration of Megan up there. As for my crossover, it's almost finished. One of these days I have to finish putting it here.

Didn't you say Wind Whistler is your favorite? She's mine too, and the way that fic portrays her is the main reason I despise it.

And Megan is a bit of a bitch too.

Yes well, I have several changes in mind for Wind Whistler for when I adapt this in comic form.  It will be addressed.

The rest of the story works quite well for me.

It's true that Megan is a bit of a bitch, but I'd rather that then the saccharine Mary Sue that she was in the old cartoon.

Thanks.  Well, technically I did not come up with the backstory.  This is just my paraphrase from the fanfiction on which this is based.  You can find it linked in the description.

I'm surprised only one person on Derpibooru as commented on this, but that gun looks weird. It seems to start off as a generic pump-action shotgun , but then switches over to being an over/under-style double barrel. Small, perhaps, but it is jarring.

Sorry.  I looked up some pictures of actual shotguns for reference, but it seems I will have to do more meticulous research for when I draw her gun in the comic.  Thanks for the heads up.  I want to be as prepared as possible for people who notice things like that.  XD

It would be great if Megan did make some kind of appearence in future seasons in a two-part episode just once. Give a nice little homage to G1 with a story filled with humor and adventure in G4 fashion

Starbat In reply to BBBHuey [2014-01-11 22:34:17 +0000 UTC]

I suppose it would, but I'd be wary of such a thing.  The Megan of the original series had the "seeds" of the character depicted above, but overall she was still pretty flat and one-dimensional.  And really, what do you expect from an 80s kids show written for little girls...

The reason I like THIS Megan is actually mainly because I like what DVD Davidson did with her in his fanfiction.  Basically, he really developed her into a complex and angsty personality that was fun to read about.

However, Hasbro tends to play these things "safe", given the target audience, and I guess there's nothing "wrong" with that, per se.  It IS a kid's show.  But given the way they restrict the level of depth and seriousness that the show can explore, I think they would be limited in their ability to inject Megan into the show in a way that would satisfy me.  Her original context was in the original show, which had its own tone and style.  I'd just be afraid of it feeling very tacky and superficial, kind of like Equestria Girls.

So that would be my concern, but I essentially agree with you.  It would be nice if they could pay homage to the original series by having Megan make a cameo, but ONLY IF they found a way to do it "right", if that makes any sense.  XD

BBBHuey In reply to Starbat [2014-01-11 23:12:34 +0000 UTC]

You make a good valid point

But the Megan I usually have in mind is someone with a more "Gwen Ten" attitude. A no nonsense type of girl with a few comical aspects. Potential leadership qualities but sort of treated as a third wheel with no special talents until the very end. Sort of a grump but is genuinely kind, with a strong will and determination when things get tough. Not afraid to get dirty.

Starbat In reply to BBBHuey [2014-01-11 23:34:33 +0000 UTC]

I've never really watched Ben 10, but I'm sure I'd love to see that in the show.

I guess the next concern I'd have is what plot device they would have to use to cross over Megan's world (and the world of G1 for that matter) with the G4 MLP world.  Would G1 be ancient history for modern Equestria, as in the fanfiction, or would Megan be a hard reboot of her character, with no back-story relating to the original series?

These are complex and contentious questions that I think would divide the fanbase if they ever tried to pursue this, much like Alicorn Twilight or Equestria Girls.

Although I'm sure I'd love to see it happen, I think I may be a minority among bronies in that regard, as most don't seem to care that much for G1.  And of course, the target audience would be too young to remember who Megan is anyway.  So other than to be an obscure bit of fanservice, I don't see it happening in reality.  But hypothetically, it would be interesting.

It's already dicredited. With the exception of EG which is a special exception, the dev team have said no humans are appearing. However, Megan and her siblings recieve recurring background mythology gags in the annual

Starbat In reply to A-hardie [2013-12-11 03:47:24 +0000 UTC]

I believe it was Lauren Faust who said that, but she's not on the team anymore.

And EG was just the most blatant example of how the current version of MLP has deviated from her original vision (also, the existence of more than two alicorn princesses).  So there's really no telling what the creative team might do now.

That said, I still think the inclusion of humans, and specifically the human characters of G1, is highly unlikely.

Oh yeah, pitifully when she have to kill her very own best friend. There's little can be done, very Episode 3 indeed.

Anyway, will look forward to the next set of humans, can't wait to see Danny & Molly, but I'll choose Danny first since it's best to take turns on the gender, and I'm pretty sure you'll draw his angry face when he lost Surprise and blames Megan for his real love for that fun pegasus who refuses combat training.

Starbat In reply to BB-K [2013-09-11 11:18:31 +0000 UTC]

Well, it's Megan who's known for the angst in the story, so I did a bit of that for her in this character sheet.  But Danny, for the most part, is a fairly happy character.

But in the comic proper, there will a variety of different expressions for me to capture.

BB-K In reply to Starbat [2013-09-11 11:51:54 +0000 UTC]

I know, I remember the animation industry will do a set of expression sheets as well. So I'll be expecting a lot more. But hopefully don't feature Megan's parents, I find them unnecessary, a silhouette or shoulder angles will be sufficient, particularly for Blackie's ill fate till his death.

Starbat In reply to BB-K [2013-09-11 11:58:45 +0000 UTC]

I was thinking I would keep Megan's father's face off screen, or perhaps partially shadowed/obscured by a weather worn stetson.  But that's a long ways off.  I have plenty of time to figure out how I will handle that.

But... one thing I'm sadden the most, this is just like in Revenge of the Sith, where Padme cannot follow Anakin's path to the dark side. And yes, I feel sadden when Wind Whistler gone to the dark side and then gets terribly killed by the pickaxe.

And, in the end, her honour and her determination to protect her Little Ponies led her to a horrible, wonderful, unforgivable and unsurpassed act... one that has haunted her for five years and left her a broken shell of the girl she once was.

Now, it falls to the Elements of Harmony to learn if they can save their world's first saviour.

Yes, I agree it's become a very powerful and thoroughly enjoyable fic.  I just hope I can do it justice as a comic.

I have my suspicions about what the author plans to do in the conclusion, but I'll wait and see.  The anticipation is great.

BB-K In reply to Starbat [2013-09-11 07:55:28 +0000 UTC]

If you plan it as a comic, you're going to need tons of artists and colorists to help you out on this one. Not only that, this is kind of like a Kickstarter campaign and you need funds to make the full comic actually happen. Or maybe I'm misunderstood a bit.

If you do so well in all of these, I'm pretty sure the crew & their Hasbro superior may revive it and got the attention not just from the fiction, but from your concept arts on the G1 characters too.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Starbat In reply to BB-K [2013-09-11 11:15:49 +0000 UTC]

I doubt a Kickstarter campaign would get very far.  I'm not exactly appealing to the lowest common denominator among bronies when it comes to fanart for G1.  I'm just doing it because I am passionate about it.  Plus, part of the point of doing this is to expand my own skill and versatility as an artist.  If can create a huge comic fanfic about Dash's high school life, then surely I can do this.  To me the hard part, the story, is already done.

I'd love to think that Hasbro, or any of the production crew might see what I do and be influenced by it, or at least appreciate it.  A note of acknowledgement from Lauren Faust, in particular, would make my decade.  But I can only hope...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BB-K In reply to Starbat [2013-09-11 11:49:52 +0000 UTC]

Kickstarter is also unlikely as Hasbro find this as very high profile and the attention is so huge based on support by various fans, surely they'll find it and then cease & desist it.

Hmm, very well, let's see how it goes and hopefully that story be finished so it can be moved on to work on your project instead, I totally love to see a large scale G1 comic getting the G4 treatment, and better yet to see the humans giving some mane makeover and despite being far away to wait, having Rarity's hair messed up turned pink.

Speaking of that, it'll take some time although the main problem I notice is in Celestia's comic recently, the crew drew some G1 ponies in there, I spot Firefly, Glory, Surprise and Gusty.

G4 Applejack looks pretty much just like G1 Applejack.  So likewise, whenever G1 characters make cameos in the official G4 universe, I just think of them as descendants of the "real" G1.

` Very solid idea and I love the comic. You've really done your homework and research and it's so wonderful to know someone who loves the fic is doing this

As for drawing people being hard have you tried using reference shots? If you look online you can find plenty of photos of people and even artist models that might help.

As for my slight critiques I think for the face beside the locket the eyes are a tad oversized (big relative to her head, and also appearing too close together - they usually should be about a single eye's width apart when face-on; so, yes, they will be closer together at the angle she is facing, but the angle is slight, so it will only be a little), and her forehead a little short (the eyeline is usually pretty close to the vertical center of the face, and seems a little low here - perhaps you centered them with respect to the oval of her head, instead).

 Hope those help

Thank you very much.  I look forward to illustrating the story.

Yes, I use human references all the time, whether its photos from online, or photos of friends and family who pose for me when I want a very specific posture.

Yes, most of the critiques I've received pertain to that one depiction of young Megan with the over-sized eyes.  I was trying to go for a hybrid style between the "big-eyed" style of the G4 ponies, and a slightly more realistic "Disney-like" style, so that both pony and human characters feel like they belong to the same reality.  I will keep an eye on this problem in the future.   Figuring this stuff out is kind if trial and error, and comes with experience, I think.

(I guess I kind of hinted at an origin for Celestia's horse shoes, as being Mimic's horse shoes.  But that's up to your imagination; maybe grounds for a fanfiction.)
