Well, I’m trying to uphold a personal tradition of doing a Christmas themed picture every year. Last year’s was this one, starbat.deviantart.com/art/Tri… , based on A Christmas Carol. This one is based on the tale of the Nutcracker. Originally, this was a request by ~hooon last Christmas season, and I thought it was a good idea. Somehow I always end up making Twilight look kind of sinister in these Christmas pictures. I should probably keep an eye on that. XDIn case there are any purists out there who have read the original “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” by E. T. A. Hoffmann, and notice inconsistencies here, then please be advised that I have not read the original source material.
Mainly, this image is based, in addition to ponies, on a scene from the animated film “The Nutcracker Prince”, produced by Warner Brothers Pictures in 1990. That has always been one of my absolute favorite Christmas movies. To give further context to this scene, it is directly based on this clip from that film, www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcbSxH… . Give that a watch if you haven't seen this film. It’s only a minute and half long.

Fluttershy and Dash = Dolls on the toy shelf
Pinkie and Applejack = Toy soldiers on the toy shelf

My only suggestion regarding not making Twilight Creepy would be to stop casting her as the creepiest character of the story.
An interesting take on the old classic (and I have seen the cartoon you mentioned). Spike would actually make a very convenient nutcracker since he could roast the nuts too. The others as dolls is really hilarious too.
You could have gone a little closer to the original and have the Mouse/Diamond Dog King have all three of the diamond dogs' heads.
Ponifying classics is fun. It would actually be fun to take the old Illustrated Classics books and redraw their pictures with ponies. War of the Worlds could replace the creepy as hell Martians with changelings. Have G1 as well as G4 characters as the classic characters. I wish I could draw.

Yes, I suppose there are all sorts of classics that are just begging to be ponified. We just saw the Mane 6 crossed with classic comic book heroes. That was certainly "different". XD

I think in the original the Mouse King had seven heads, but the ballet typically has him with one or three heads because it would be too cumbersome on the dancer to have all those fake heads. It's interesting that American animations typically give him one head while European animations give him multiple heads.
And Rainbow Dash was amusing. She's probably thinking "I might be a doll, but I can still kick your gaudy ass." Though, she probably would have preferred to be a toy soldier.

this is fantastically awesome! the colors are bright and pretty, all your characters match up, the different poses everyone has are really cool, and theres just enough magic in the picture that everything about it makes me smile. i kinda wanna see a written fic about this now too...
