The Anosov Class was developed in the mid-2280s in response to the ever increasing need to provide more flexible bulk cargo transport capabilities to various civil merchant interests throughout the Federation. At the time, the various merchant fleets were predominantly dependent on designs which were either former Starfleet Transport Command vessels cached into civilian service or designs as much as 50 years old. This later fact was especially worrisome to Federation economic planners as merchant interests found keeping the old vessels in service became increasingly uneconomical as spare parts stockpiles were exhausted or found to be woefully out of date. Thus, the timely introduction of the Anosov Class proved instrumental in maintaining the vast supply chains of bulk goods and raw materials required to support the expansive and voracious economic needs of the United Federation of Planets in the later part of the 23rd and early 24th centuries.
