Description
// PLEASE FULL VIEW //Caer is a fairie who fell in love with a human by watching him through a mirror. She made a deal with a Queen so that she would be able to meet with him every night in his dreams, in which he would never remember her outside of and would only last for a hundred days.
The mirror was all that stood between her and the one she loved so I wanted to portray her longing for him.

Done for a contest by ~AdmirateursDeLuciole . I've always admired Luciole's style and her characters/dolls. We had to choose a character, a theme out of the list, and a misc. aspect out of a list. I think mine ended up applying to more than one, but basically... I chose Caer as the character, beauty and elegence for the theme (tranquility or love could also work), and Ornate Design for the miscellaneous aspect.
Hopefully I've done justice to the character. She's from Luciole's 9 pg comic, Reflections. The story is beautiful and the illustrations so detailed and elegant. You can read it at Luciole's gallery [link]
~ On another note.... this is 95% acrylic painting, fine tuning, touch-ups, and details done digitally. The canvas drove me nuts! It was my first try at canvas and was way to rough for the details I usually like to do, thus my frustration. You can see the texture up close here [link] blah
Original Sketch [link]
Original Painting (untampered) [link]
- If you want to compare what I added digitally. Mostly fixing her face, hair, doing most of the swan, touching things up here and therem, and adding small details.

Beautiful colours... I love the fact that the texture from the canvas is popping out a bit, it makes the image very alive more rough, a great contrast for this sad subtle theme...

Wow. This image just about breaks my heart. She seems so lonely, and I think the title of "Longing" is very fitting. I love that she's holding the mirror so close. I love the color choice. I'm going to have to go check out the comic now. Beautiful image<33

Eek! Nasty canvas! But wow did that turn out wonderfully! I wouldnt mind seeing just a photo or something of it pre-digitalediting just to see the difference.. but either way its very very pretty!

lol nasty canvas is my sentiments exactly. And that's a fine idea (I scanned it in two parts to work off of it a bit more). The painting doesn't really feel finished to me in many ways, though there wasn't a terrible lot I did digitally. Mostly fixing her face and hair, details in her dress, the swan & flowers, touching up colors and things here and there. I felt some of the details were too harsh on the mirror and toned them down.
Well anyway, you can see it here and compare it youreself [link]

I see what you mean. I think I like the finished product better.. that canvas was really cruel to your detail. You should make it available as a print.. its so delicate and pretty.. I think alot of people would like it.

Yes exactly I think I'll be using Bristol board or something smooth for my paintings from now on. I'll have to use the canvase boards I bought on something I don't care about detail as much for.
I'll try and figure out the DA print thing to make some of my stuff available through it

Och, it's so beautiful, but really sad The story is very unhappy and your paint ilustrated fairy's solitude and sadness so good, that I can almost feel it. I like also the swan, that is with her.

*gasp* that is well past beautiful. The swan... and the mirror... and the faerie herself...
Wow. And I'm not one to enjoy such things.
Wow.

Very beautiful. Great colour choices- they give the picture a warm yet sad sort of mood.
And although I only noticed it the second time I looked at the picture, the swan is very well done too.

Thank you I wasn't sure what colors I wanted at first, so I'm glad they helped create the right mood. I kinda like where I had the swan more in the original sketch now, but for the painting I moved it back to the right thinking it would help the composition XD

fav for definite! Brilliant work, and the texture of the canvas shows through, making it wonderful. (how did you do it?! Acrylic is SO HARD!)

StarMasayume In reply to GoredGuar [2007-03-16 21:50:45 +0000 UTC]
haha the acrylics weren't the problem. I'm getting pretty used to them, it was doing it on the canvas that was a big headache. I usually use them on smoother surfaces. Could barely do any of the details I wanted so had to add them in digitally. ^^
