Michael's mental health went downhill real quick after the accident. He started to suffer from depression and heard echoing voices in his head. The boy lost any threat to reality and is drowning in his own sorrow. He self harmed to cope with the voices and it gave him some distraction.
Most commonly the voices said things like "Murderer", "Mistake!" or "End it!"
