I've always wondered why the River Person says to "beware" of him, since he's probably the most mysterious character in the entire game...and we never meet him anyway (except in messing with the files prior to the update, or on a very rare chance after the update).
Beware of someone you've never met and will never meet in your playthrough...or someone who vanishes in a split second when you try to interact with him if you mess with the game's code or find that rare door.
I think "beware" is the wrong word to use, so...yea, I kinda agree with Gaster on this one. XD

I've wondered that too. I dunno if it has something to do with the fact that his situation makes interacting with him potentially dangerous? When his follower mentions having a piece of him, they disappear, but who knows what that implies.
There's the possibility that Gaster did some, uh, unsavory things to humans in his experiments when he existed. And the sound room you end up in after leaving Mystery Man's room (which you previously had to alter the fun value to, what 666, to even access?) contains a song called "Meat Factory" right before Gaster's Theme. Seems ominous. But again, who knows? It's all speculation. Thanks a lot, Toby. :T

Hrm...that could be it. I mean, his essence is scattered across time and space, neither here nor there, existing but not existing at the same time. I suppose interacting with something like that could cause a major collapse of time and space.
Do those songs have different names on the OST? I bought the soundtrack, but I can't find them on there (granted, I only skimmed it once).

The songs don't appear on the soundtrack, sadly. They were just pulled from the game files. They're super incomplete compared to the songs that actually appear in game, like Meat Factory is just the same couple of notes looped (I mean so is G's theme, but it's at least got a real melody).

Creepy.
It's actually sort of genius on Toby Fox's part, when one thinks about it.
I mean, there's this mysterious character who, in game, fell into one of his creations (and as a result, is obviously scattered across time and space). The grayed out monsters could be echoes of him, and talking to them reveals information about him. There's also the gray door which rarely appears after the patch (I never got it to show up even walking back and forth a lot) where the player can actually encounter Gaster.
But all of his major information is in the game's files (like those two songs, as you pointed out). In game, Gaster is scattered across time and space...on a more meta level, he's scattered in the game's files. Snowdin (the Wrong Number Song), Waterfall (the gray door and possibly the gray monster kid), Hotland (the three grayed out characters), and True Lab (entry #17).
The only places I haven't seen or heard of him would be the Core and New Home...
...but then again, New Home is pretty much entirely gray except for the throne room, so maybe just that gray is supposed to indicate his presence. Not to mention that he built the Core, and there are those strange locations in the Ruins where Flowey pops up which have only a splash of green as their only color...
More on the meta side, all of these instances are programmed in the game's files...some of them (like entry #17) are only accessible by accessing the game's files. Before the patch and the gray door having a chance to appear, he and his name only came up if one went into the files (though, I believe the grayed out monsters are still there); an erased character who still exists within the game's files.
That's pure genius, especially since Undertale is a game with heavy metagaming involved (characters like Sans, Flowey, and perhaps Frisk knowing that they're in a game...or at least a "controlled time loop").

It is genius! And the fact that all of these things you previously had to tamper with the game's files to find, are now canonically in the game as of last patch, almost like the players' digging and searching and prodding around the Gaster mystery is what's actually slowly bringing him back, tying him to existence again.
I think in order to find the grey door and the followers, the fun value still has to be at a certain level, but obviously organically in this case. Good luck with finding them though, I keep playing through the game myself hoping to get lucky.
It's amazing how so many little, disjointed pieces create this huge mystery, and it's really fun to try filling in the gaps (though I do hope Toby releases more actual information about Gaster some day).
