Description
And you run away because you always do,
I knew my love would be too much for you,
And all I wanted was to be your rapture.
Seeing Peridot, Lapis and Pumpkin become a family and start to recover from their various mental health issues together has been one of the most enjoyable aspects of the last few seasons of Steven Universe for me. I see certain characteristics of both Lapis and Peridot in my own mentality, and seeing their breakup in the most recent arc really touched a nerve with regards to the way that I’ve handled relationship breakdowns and incompatibilities in the past.
The song “Rapture” by Charlotte Martin that became the inspiration for this piece is a story in and of itself. The original solo version uses the verse above as the final verse, whereas the more heavily mixed album release version skips the verse and replaces “leaving you in a dark dark dream” with “loving you in a dark dark dream”. It’s almost like there’s a version where the subject gave up on the relationship and one where they stayed. Seeing as Charlotte’s husband Ken Andrews has been her producer for over a decade and the album version released several months after the solo version it’s possible that one party ran and then came back for what they had left.
I’ve always been a runner, always left at the first sign of difficulty, never looked back at what I was leaving behind. Maybe I should start.
