This flag is part of a project I came up with to explore what makes a national flag or symbol. I wanted to suggest what might occur if real nations wanted to design new flags from scratch, without using current or historical flags. It’s unlikely most nations would want to change their flags, but it’s fun to speculate on a “what if”?

I based this flag on one of Persia’s most famous cultural symbols, the Persian carpet. The symbol in the centre is known as the Kaviani star, which was a symbol of the Sasanian Empire which ruled Persia before the arrival of Islam in 623AD.

Notes

Persia officially changed its name to Iran in 1935, but I’ve always preferred the old name, hence its inclusion here.

The idea of this project is to show all of the alternate flags on one map of Asia. The size of the map means it shows some nations in the Middle East, East Africa and Southern Europe which are not normally considered part of Asia.
