Hermes was the messenger of the gods and the patron of poetry, travelers, and thieves.
He was conceived and born on the same day in a cave in Arcadia - and on that very day he stole cattle from Apollo. I'm sure the gods were excited to see what else he would get up to.
He was interested in all sorts of things and basically picks up the slack from the rest of the gods as a jack of all trades.
He was the only god who could come and go from the Underworld without consequence besides Hades and Persephone, and often took messages and souls to Hades.
Hermes was considered a "trickster" due to his cunning and and clever personality.
He was the father of the god Pan - who looked like a satyr.
And like many other gods - he was known for having A LOT of affairs with all sorts from gods, to mortals, to nymphs.
