Description
PrologueHuey (Age 7)
Dewey and Louie (Age 4)
Huey and Dewey were hiding underneath the couch while the screaming of their youngest brother, Louie, continued. Huey looked over to where Dewey was. He saw that Dewey was trying his hardest to cover his ears and the soft sound of whimpering could be heard. Huey quietly scooted over and held Dewey close to his chest and covered Dewey’s ears for him.
“Sh,” Huey whispered. “It’s okay, D-Dewey.”
He stroked Dewey’s hair as his chest and arm of the hand that stroked Dewey’s head covered Dewey’s ears. He could tell that the tears from his own eyes are screaming to fall. He shook his head. He had to be strong. He had to be strong for Dewey.
He had to be strong for both of his brothers as well for their Uncle Donald whose weight on the couch could be seen.
Huey knew that Uncle Donald was trying his best to calm Louie.
He could hear Uncle Donald’s voice clearly from underneath the couch.
“Sh,” Donald whispered as he was able to stop Louie from screaming and flailing around so he wouldn’t hurt himself. “Sh, it’s okay, Louie. I’m here. I’m here.”
Huey could hear Louie’s breathing and heavy panting slowly coming back to normal breathing.
“Sh, calm down,” Donald continued to whisper. “The Shadow Man is gone now. Okay? I’m here. I’m here. The Shadow Man is gone now.”
Louie fell asleep and everything was silent.
Huey let go of Dewey’s ears.
“Boys?” Donald said. “It’s okay, you can come out now.”
Huey and Dewey scrambled out from underneath the couch. They could see Louie was asleep. His breathing back to normal and he looked like that he was at peace. They smiled and sighed with relief and looked up at their uncle.
“Hey, come here,” Donald smiled and held out an arm.
Huey and Dewey rushed towards their Uncle Donald and hugged him close crying and shaking. They could hear their Uncle Donald whispering words of comfort to them as he held them close in a protective embrace. They heard him tell them that Louie was going to be okay now.
Huey turned his attention to Louie and stroked his younger brother’s cheek, “We love you, Louie. Please, get better soon. Please?”
Donald sighed, “Huey? I’ve told you and Dewey this before, Louie’s not going to get better. I’m sorry. The doctor-“
Huey choked a sob and rushed out of the living room and Dewey rushed after him towards their room upstairs.
The sound of a door slamming was heard.
