Discord stared at the dark ceiling. His bright eyes were heavy with sleep, but his mind was too awake for the sweet release of slumber. He turned over on his side, and stared at the open balcony ahead, and at Luna's glowing night sky. Smiling bitterly, he began to recall a memory...

It was a year ago when the incident had occurred. He and Celestia had been developing their romantic relationship quite well at that point. In fact, he would propose only a few months later...
He remembered waking up from an afternoon nap with the sound of a child's voice crying out-
"Princess! Princess!"
He had tried to ignore it. But the reply was what jolted him awake-
"Boreal! I'm coming dear!"
Celestia's sweet tone shook Discord into an upright position.
"Princess! I've-"
"There's no need to be so formal, Boreal. As your mother, I-"
Discord had heard enough.
"What is going on here?"
Celestia looked up at Discord as he stood on the balcony, a confused frown on his face. She smiled and quickly floated herself and Boreal up to the balcony with magic.
The sun princess giggled and gave Boreal's shoulder a squeeze before cheerily replying, "This, Discord, is Boreal! I know you two haven't formally met before, but you are relatively familiar with each other, yes?"
Both Discord and the nervous youngster halfheartedly nodded their heads.
"Wonderful! Now then, Discord, Boreal has been my student since he was very, very young. He's really...more of a son to me than a student. He was orphaned quite early on in his life, and I took him in when no one else would..."
She smiled lovingly at the boy and kissed his cheek.
She continued, "It's truly unfortunate that you haven't really met each other before today, but I hope you can become well acquainted, at the very least! Now then, since Boreal has just come back from finishing his second year at the Gifted Unicorn's school, and you have just awoken from your nap, why don't you both spend some time talking to each other! I have to get back to the Great Hall for a meeting, but we can all have dinner together, alright?"
"Sure," Discord growled.
With that Celestia hugged both her loves and went on her merry way.
A moment of silence ensued as the two stared each other down.
"Don't you dare call me 'father.'"
"I wouldn't ever dream of it."

Discord would end up having a loooong talk with Celestia about how not all surprises are welcome, and etcetera.
And Boreal and Discord wouldn't really get to feeling familiar with each other until after Ate was born.
