Description I’ve always loved the way an indoor pool looks at night. The lighting is usually quite dim, and the way the water reflects what little light is available looks so sad and lonely. It covers the whole room in an eerie blue, wavy glow. I wanted the picture to have that look.

I once watched some guy break up with some girl in a room like the one described above. The pool served as a getaway area from a party. I stayed in the room and watched the blue glow soak everything, and tried to recover from a hangover that was setting in early. This guy brought his girlfriend into the room, unaware that I was there- and broke up with her. The look on the girls face… so cliché, seen so many times- but the pool water reflected on her face amplified it all, somehow the look on her face was a definition in itself. There was a certain intimacy in the dark restlessness of the pool water which created its own light when reflected off her face, the perfect allegory.

Somehow the saddest things one sees aren't terribly dramatic scenes, they don't exist in lifetime movies or in the depths of a novel… the saddest things are usually more subtle, more commonplace. It's a look, a thing, a place, a time or all of the above, and in a way this subtlety is more visceral and has more of a chance of affecting you, and securing itself in that crazy random repertoire of memory that comprises an individual. For this picture I was trying to define that subtle sadness, and frame that one look, time, place in a picture, and I found a definition in my own memory, a scene I recall from a while back- the one above.

My tribute to a nameless girl.

her eyes look so hurt, so dangerous...
i used to see those eyes
over my bed in my sleep,
hanging in the dark,
I would roll over
and try to hide away,
in a dream,
and the nightmare
would hang over me,
and, still to this day, I can feel
its presence trying still
to suffocate me.
