Some years ago, the heroine Nightfall travelled north to Lawston to pursue a suspect in one of her cases. Unable to find him, and stymied by Lawston's considerable anti-vigilante laws, Nightfall departed the city, intending to return there once a more favorable climate emerged, but left behind a cache with one of her off-brand costumes and some weapons, just in case an opportunity arose in the future to search the city undercover.

More recently, the cache was discovered by Adrianna Veludo, a wash-out from the local police academy. Using her detective skills, she realized who the costume was meant for and decided to "borrow" it to fight crime, figuring that if the cops came after her, they would assume that she was Nightall.

That did not pan out, as she looks nothing like Susan Davenport, and now the press has stuck her with the name "Nightfalse". She's become a nuisance to the other local heroes, as she insists on helping the cops enforce the anti-vigilante laws, despite technically violating those laws herself, and has earned the ire of MYTHOS, the superhero union, after nearly bringing the cops to their door on several occasions.
