Back to using Sol and Do as basic ponies. xD (I couldn't think of a neat background to them. DD: )Do isn't impressed about being turned into a half-bug to this ref sheet. Sol is very amused. According to him, those leg holes tickle.
Yet another kind of ponies that is all Moonstuck fault. (Moonstuck is a wonderful askblog by . It's story is already finished.) This sheet is about pure changelings, too, but they are canonical, so, I didn't feel like drawing them. You already know how they are. It will be long, like the seraph ponies, because I wanted changelings that aren't necessarily enemies. Actually, the bat-ponies and vampire ponies reference sheets would be huge if I had made them in my current mood. I'll probably edit the vampire ponies sheet.
Much like Moonstuck, changelings in My Little Nocturne are a shy and relatively pacific people. Their colonies are all bound by love - love between the queen and them and love between themselves. They use that love to feed themselves and to create their hive. When their nymphs hatch and leave eggshells, or they don't need an estructure anymore, they eat that rubbish and create love energy again. Like every live being, changelings can create love energy themselves, but it is not enough to all their needs. That way, they walk into pony villages, draining all spare love (love that ponies have to the place they live, unrequited love and so on) and, if it is still not enough, mimicking ponies to get the love directed to them. In their hive, you have worker changelings, that build the chambers, get external love and feed the nymphs, soldier changelings, that protect the hive (the ones that we saw in A Canterlot Wedding) and the queen, who lay the eggs, contact the queens of other hives to peace/war arrangements and dispense the love they gather, so no changeling starves. (Workers and soldiers can lay eggs, too, but only if a queen is not around, or is still too young to lay eggs. Adult queens inhibit their fertility.) Speaking of eggs, all queens lay a small number of eggs that will result in new queens. These eggs are stored in slime, to be hatched only if the current queen grows old, or dies suddenly. If, for some reason, the queen died and there are no royal eggs to hatch, the colony can ask (or steal) them to ally hives.
When everything is going fine in the hive, they don't need many external fonts of love. But, if the circuit of love between them and the queen or between themselves is broken or corrupted, they quickly starve. Their hive mind is a network connecting their thoughts and making it easy to bound them in love chains, but it doesn't inhibit their free will. Changelings can disconnect from the hive mind and flee the hive, but they will be considered traitors and living on their own is very difficult.
Half-changelings is what happens when those disconnected changelings settle down with a pony that loves them and together they form a family. They look like a changeling, but have the sillhouette of a pony. Like their changeling parents, they can change their form at will, need love to be properly healthy (although they can barely survive on regular food) and can create cocoons. Most half-changelings can't have offspring, but, since it's a magic land and magic hack all natural laws, some of them can.
The last thing about changelings and half-changelings is something that I created as a head canon to the show. I mean, look at the A Canterlot Wedding episode. Look carefully. WHERE ALL THAT CHANGELING ARMY WAS BEFORE CHRYSALIS' SPEECH? Why didn't anyone in Canterlot see that coming? Luna and Celestia had a FREAKING TELESCOPE!
To explain this, I created a changeling ability called "distress call". When they are in danger, they can create a small portal that summons reinforcements. Workers and soldiers can summon just a few soldiers, but queens can summon their entire army of soldiers (and other queens, if they need to negotiate, but other queens can choose if they will answer the call or not).
