OK, the Van Helsing family. I should have said something about them on page 2, but whatever. After the first Abraham Van Helsing's quest to kill Dracula and his wifes, both the Vampire Society and the Vampire Hunters Society became concerned and a little afraid of him - I mean, under his direction, a bunch of untrained youths managed to kill the president of Vampire Society and him, himself, infiltrated Dracula's castle and killed three vampires alone (remember, he was an old man and killed three vampires alone - it took four young men and two snipers to kill just one), a feat that all of them knew was much more difficult than what the novel based on the journals of the expedition makes us believe.

Prof. Van Helsing joined the vampire hunters, but, instead of beginning a holy war against vampires, like they feared, he created the Truce, an agreement between the hunters and the vampires that says that vampire hunters will only hunt the vampires that are threats to humans. As long as they are careful while feeding and don't mess with human politics, the Vampire Society can exist in peace. But, if they step out of the line, the hunters will have no mercy. After that, the Van Helsings (with the exception of the professor's son, that didn't want to have anything with supernatural affairs) did a great job creating various methods of self-defence for the hunters, some of them including mental conditioning since childhood. After they started their (sometimes crazy) research, hunters became able to compete with the super-speed of the vampires and to use even small weaknesses in combat.

The Van Helsings also have a friendship with members of the Arkham Angels society, a group created in the Miskatonic University to deal with cosmic threats. After some collaborations with them, they cleaned England from almost every eldrich abomination that could be a danger to the world. There is a legend among the members of the Vampire Hunters Society that a secret cult was trying to summon a ancient and powerfult shadow that could destroy the life in Earth, when a red-headed young cultist that was late to the ritual entered the room without the ceremonial mask. When the summoned shadow saw him, it shrieked like a little girl and disappeared, and no one could summon it again.

It's no wonder that Vlad's father wanted his son to grow up near the Van Helsings. He didn't expect that Vlad would befriend Bram, and was a bit nervous about it. I mean, you would be nervous, too, if your rebellious and rude son was near a child whose family can obliterate your family if offended enough. But forbiding Vlad to see Bram would be an even worse offense, so, they had to roll with it.

Some people ask me why Bram seemed to fear Vlad so much, when they met for the first time. I hope that you have noticed that it took him just one panel to go from "apparently afraid of" to "annoyed by" Vlad, and it wouldn't happen if he was actually panicking. Bram said that in a mocking way, although you can only know it after you know him better.
