So these are the masters that I selected from each of the gens prior to the one in my game.
You'll only be able to fight them after you finish the game. But they're still in it, and they're gonna kill you if you haven't trained for them.

I'm sure that pokemon fans will know these people, but if you don't:

Red from RBGY/ FRLG, Gen I
Gold/ Ethan from GSC/ HGSS, Gen II
Sapphire/ May from RSE, Gen III
Diamond/ Lucas from DPPt, Gen IV
White/ Hilda from BW, Gen V
