Description
this isnt REALLY a tutorial, its just how i did old Johnny... didnt really fit well with any of the other categories so eh...anyways, yeah lemmie elaborate on the steps i took here...
1 - Planning and Drafting: mostly mental shit, and just draw ur lines down on paper, try and get the perspectives of ur poses right... something i do crap at too often...
2 - Draft Sketching: some ppl dont need this, but i dunno, for a bit of guidance, id draft my lil person 1st... nothing special, just rough lines, and a rough sense of proportion... i havent got it down all that well...
3 - Lineart drawing - YEESS!!! some figurative drawing now... just go over ur draft (set in low layer opacity) once again, this time actually drawing the thingy, and makin it as clean as u want.
4 - Lineart Detailing - Do the final linear details... no fuss really, u can always add some more later, it helps to do it now so its easier to colour later. There aint much more detail to do wif Johnny.
5 - Base Colour - (in separate layers to ur lineart) Apply the base colour, i do it by using the polygonal lasso, roughly goin thru along with my lines and using edit, then fill, filling them with some solid dark colour. use diff hues in the colour if u want, i just didnt choose to for this one. it'd also be easier if u did this in sections, say a layer for the hat, hair, skin, shirt, etc etc..
6 - Highlighting - From the dark bits, lighten the bits that need lightening, if ur lazzzyyy u can use dodge... but its heaps better to toggle around with colours, hues, lightnesses, and darkness and just brush it on. do this in separate layers to ur base colours, easy way to paint em is... go to ur base colour layer >> click Select, and load selection, then ok. It should have selected all the bits where youve painted ur base colour on. now make a new a layer and click apply layer mask on it(the button is just on the bottom of the layer palette). now that new layer would be ur highlighting layer, nothing u paint on there will overlap the areas that youve applied solid colour on.
7 - Colour Detailing/ highlighting - Now u do the same shit as u did in step 6, only much much much more detailed. this for me is the bulk of the work, you gotta consider lighting, contrast, perspective and alll that pain in the ass shit that comes with drawing... gotta consider how strong the colour u apply is, how bright or dark it is, what hue fits, oohh geez yeah its a pain... in this case i had to highlight and detail with the clothe's wrinkles, muscles, hair strands blah blah blah...
8 - Final touches and Accessories - This can be anything, anything at all u gotta do to polish it up... in this case i just gave his clothes patterns n shit... in most other cases ppl do some final detailing here...
9 - Background - I make my BG in a different file and add it around steps 8 and 9... i add it much later on in the process cause sometimes its too much for the comp to work with so many active pixels... in other words, it lags me to work with the background in the same file. usually id finish the foreground 1st then add it on, but for non laggy ppl, sure, it might actually be better that u work with the background, it makes where the lighting should be and stuff more clear. and enables u to make the foreground interact with ur Bg more easily.
10 - Tone for mood and Polish - Its not a step ive taken here, wif most works i do... just final tone tweaks, colour/contrast/lightness/darkness/photofilter/lighting, heaps of shit, just to unite and kinda finish ur overall work up. then go adding ur signature or whatever...
in the end, i had this... so yeah. finished product's here. [link]
