Description
From my shoot last night with ^ hesitation and her little sister Tamara. It was fun. Of course, Hesi and I are used to working together, and her sister is a natural model too.Simple light here. A single flash from straight ahead and above. A second flash lit up a white wall in the background. Both flashes were diffused through umbrella boxes. I poured lots of light on this scene so I could use f8 and have lots of depth of field, keeping both of them in focus.

Nope. The 283's are semi-retired. I'm using Alien Bees B800 studio flashes now. Thanks for the comment. You should try portraiture. It's fun!

Excellent, light, great models. This is definately an area where Im lacking in technical know-how. I feel comfortable with natural light portraiture, but I envy your studio stuff. I have 2- 550 ex flashes now along with the wireless ST-E2. Im hoping to figure it all out for some informal portrait stuff myself...Hope your running a lighting seminar in the near future Ill be in attendance.

I would love to run a lighting seminar. You've got some cool flashes there! Definitely play with them. If you're comfortable with natural light, then try to simulate natural light by firing the flashes through some kind of diffuser that simulates a window or something. It's not like you're wasting film.

Very nicely done. You are a master of lighting and of working with models. The models being easy to work with but you still must know what to do with them, and you certainly do. Outstanding way the stripes solidify the bottom half of the frame, leaving a light, airy feel to the space around the models' heads and hair. Excellent composition. Oh hell, excellent all around!!!

Very nice. Great expressions. I like the matching shirts a lot, too. Did you pose them or did they pose themselves? Great use of the space for a tight portrait. I want to get into more photography like this. Thanks for showing how it should be done!

We worked together on the poses. ^ hesitation is really good at posing, and she knows what I like. She is good at bending Tamara into the correct shapes too. I will usually fine-tune the pose, like, "Tilt your head this way," or "Squish closer together," or "Move your arm a little to the left." That kinda thing. With other models I have to be much more specific.

Good work again Kevin, not that you can go wrong with photographing ^hesitation or her sister.
The lighting is really well done, as you mention in your description. A lot of detail in there as well. I really like the pose they both struck, and the matching shirts gives it some continuity.
You're quite good with the camera if I do say so myself.

The backlighting is great. You've always had a knack for perfect lighting. Hesi and Tamara wearing the same shirts is a great touch too. The gray "patch" at the bottom left hand side is bothering me though, what is it?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
superkev In reply to bule [2003-11-22 20:40:41 +0000 UTC]
Oh good eye to spot that grey patch (on the right, not the left). It's actually the back of the umbrella box, which I couldn't escape due to space restrictions. But I'm having this one printed at 8x10 for my portfolio, which results in a big crop. The 8x10 version doesn't have that patch in it. Thanks as always for your comment!

Hahaha.... sorry the right, not the left. Stupid me. I'm just too stressed out right now. Just came home from an eventful evening, spending 2 hours at the police station.
Glad I could be of help, it did look a little awkward with the background behind Hesi/Tamara being white and the bottom RIGHT being gray. Good luck with the portfolio

very nice kev... is DOF really that much of a problem in shots like these? curious since i dont do portraits .. yet ..
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
superkev In reply to sfmoe [2003-11-22 19:57:30 +0000 UTC]
DoF is always a problem if you have two subjects on different planes of focus. I like to have just enough focus for my subject, so when there are two of them, it makes the job a little more difficult. The trick is to have enough light to properly expose at a higher f-stop. You should try portraits some time. It can be challenging but the results are rewarding.

A thing that denotes that they are sisters is......the clothing obviously
