You know the thing is, I can see that happening, because Americans typically are the ones who revolt against the powers that be. This could be seen as the Assassin's gaining their first real foothold against the Templars. Freemasons are considered the real architects of the nation and could be seen as modern Assassins.

from what i've learned the Freemasons are actually a neutral party in the conflict, completely unaware of the fight between Templars and Assassins

Actually, the Knights Templar and others such as Scottish Rite are offshoots of Freemasons, typically referred to as Masonic bodies.
