It wasn't that clear-cut really. They didn't even knowΒ about the box until after they gave up the Elements. It was just that giving up the Elements seemed to be the only way to save Ponyville and likely all of Equestria from the Plunder Seeds. The Box was the bonus prize for the right answer.
