Description
Another Gambit pic. I've actually started several pictures since my last post, but haven't finished any. I like to think that's a sign I'm gettin better, that I'm noticing flaws in my work more quickly, but we'll see. Anyway, had some fun with the bg and colors on this one. Please let me know what you think!Related content

I can just see him, sitting in therapy some day, completely baffled as to why he has nightmares of a big man with a hockey mask and machete. Poor kid.
Jeez, I'd go batty without a computer or internet access for a month. I bet you're glad to be back!
I hope they do a Gambit spin-off, but, you're right...they definately need to pay better attention to the plot.

Been trying to draw him myself...you make me feel better because he's younger looking in your pic, as well as mine.
I also needed some Gambit love too.

Yeah, he looks like a teenager in some of my pics. But keep in mind that he's supposed to be in his late 20's at the oldest, so I don't feel too bad if he looks a bit young; I'd say he looks about right, age-wise, to me in this pic--25ish? It's hard to draw subtle age nuances in manga. He just looks really old in some of the comics because...I'm not sure why.

I think that was mostly artists interpretation, and how most Gambit fans who have followed him for years are mostly positive of the possibility that Remy is immortal.
I think it was because in the 90s(not that it DOESN'T happen now), ALL X-Women had these HUGE boobs. Like...wincing and back pain ones...so...I guess making him look young and (while I hate the character) standing next to Rogue and her giant 90s boobs wouldn't work because they wouldn't look the same age. *LoL*
Thankfully, most artists are now a bit more realistic when it comes to proportion. A young Gambit is a good Gambit.
Heck, Gambit is Gambit. Period.

To be fair, I read that the character was not originally intended to be all that good looking--more rough and tumble, and charming despite that. But that's not how they wrote him, so it didn't really work to have people talking about this guy like he's uber-hot, when he just looks old. Part of it was also probably the fact that they were trying to make him look sharp-featured, I think, and ended up using too much ink in the shadows (which is honestly a really common flaw among traditional western comic art, in my opinion). It may also have somethign to do with the fact that he was drawn by a man--they don't always seem to have the best grasp of masculine beauty . I think they got closest to the look in my mind around the time of the battle with the Shiar and the trial.

Oh, I totally agree about the time they started getting him looking the way I like best. Late 90s. Man...some gooooood times in comics. Wish they'd get that sort of stuff happening now-a-days. I hate reading X-Men since House of M.
I also agree with the shadows and inking. Unfortunately, before the comic boom, printing was more expensive when dealing with different colors, and the technology that we have now was non-existent. Now that we have Photoshop and more advanced printers that make it super cheap to get all the colors needed in, we don't need the harsh, thick, blocky inking that we had back then...we can put more emphasis to form in the color, which is great, because I never liked that inking style. Actually, I'm liking the more indy and fluid styles that started around the time of the Shi'ar battle and that we have now more than the old Frank Miller styles. It puts more character into the character, if you ask me, because there's more difference in overall features(both face and body).
And, to be honest...part of Gambit that I OMG adore is the fact that he's scruffy and rough and tumble. It's the five-o'clock shadow and messy hair that gives Remy part of his Devil-may-care attitude.

I agree the scruffiness is cute. I just think that the scruffiness alone isn't enough. He's also got to be hot! Then the scruff adds to the hotness. But a not hot, scruffy guy...hmmm. Of course, I have to admit drawing scruffiness is kind of hard. I agree that comic artists do a much better job with shading today--but they still tend to use too much ink in my opinion, especially with men.

Oh, definitely, but at least artists are getting better with the ink. I'm always happy with a solid crisp line-art and some gorgeous colors. While the writing in comics have really been kinda making me angry, at least I have good art to keep me buying them.

Some truly gifted comic artists out there these days. I love Jo Chen and Nebezial. Totally considering starting the Witchblade series just for the art, if I can find the 1st book.

Witchblade is good stuff. It's been a while for me...Turner has always been an inspiration.
David Mack(both Kubuki and his Daredevil run) is another artist I adore...man...really I could list them off. It's good to be a comic artist again.

Oh, now he's awesome. I don't read Daredevil, but I looked him up and he rocks. I got out of American comics for a long time because they all used the same old stilted, ink-heavy styles, but now the art has gotten so beautiful. Some graphic novels I just want to pick up and look at the art, never mind the story.
