Description
No, this isn't the 2-year project. I was working on that, but then I switched to this for a few hours....No subtle reference intended in the first panel....hehehe....
It's not just color that makes this a Work-In-Progress piece; it's also the fact that I'm open to advice on how to fix this piece up in pacing. It starts out very much "in media res"....I still haven' worked out if she moved to touch his scar or kiss him or even just came too close. Supposed to take place at some point in the third season, before Zuko leaves; I haven't really nailed a specific reason for why this is happening. Best odds would probably be that Zuko caught Mai talking about him with Azula and suspected/realized (as many fans theorize) that she was just being a way to keep his loyalties to the Fire Nation--it's all a deception. And, whether or not it turns out to be that way, Zuko's suspicion and betrayal is enough (here, anyway).
Whatever the situation, though, I believe that we'll probably be faced with a scene like this in the third season. It'll be the final turning point for Mai and Zuko's relationship--I left it ambiguous as to what happens next. I leaned a little more towards Maizu, though....
I definitely overused the echo effect in this--three different instances where you can see a throwback to some point earlier in the series. And poor Mai doesn't realize that "I need you, Zuko" isn't exactly going to help her cause....
Zuko's outburst is one that I seriously hope shows up in the canon--a display of anger and mistrust revolving around how she stayed behind when he was banished. Might not be a very fair demand, but....
I probably should have inked in Mai and Zuko's hair, but....oh, well.
SO....
Suggestions for improvement and adjustment would be very welcome before I go finalizing this.
I used heavy reference for the first panel (obviously) and the fifth. Most of the rest is freehand and/or minimal reference. Thanks to for some help with the Zuko designs, with her wardrobe pics.
The final panel will probably get a redo, but that's pretty much the effect I want....
And no, this was not made just because I'm more tolerant of Zutara now, I've had this planned for a while....and yes, Mai is floating in the second panel.
Characters are copyright of Mike and Bryan and Viacom.
Comic's mine.
Update: I'll probably be adding some prelude panels (two, probably), put in some sort of bridge after the first panel....and a pause or something.
Any suggestions for a dialogue bridge might be welcome.

No, no, I understand perfectly....and you know, usually when I'm feeling doubts about supporting the ship, I think, "Wait...but TY LEE LIKES IT!!!"
Actually, I lie, I usually just think about how Bryan said that Mai is awesome, and I know that her character won't disappoint or be relegated to some minor plot point. She'll be a major role in this season, and not just as temptation or something Zuko has but isn't happy with....
I still love the subtle thing that Mai's not one of the things that pulled Zuko over...he didn't want Mai, he wanted his throne and honor and everything. Mai's not on the table. So she's innocent of the whole "I won't be good" thing. I'm interested in knowing how she takes Uncle's imprisonment, though....
I can easily see her being amused when/if he escapes, though. XD And I get the feeling that if he was running down a hall pursued by Fire Nation guards, she'd let him pass and then step innocently out into the hallway and deter the guard group "accidentally"....
I think she's got a good heart, she's just in a bad position. And she needs a friend. A BOYfriend.
I really hope that we get a more thorough flashback of Zuko's banishment...Mai's PoV would actually be a quite powerful one....
The reasons I love the ship...all of the themes....love, crushes, awkward memories, guilt, change brought on by three years separated (come on! She becomes gothic, he's got a scar and is found serving tea....), trust, action, emo, uncertainty, choices, it's got just about EVERYTHING!!! It even has opposites attract--he's a boy, she's a girl....can I make it anymore obvious? [is shot]

No Avril, I don't think ya can But boy girl isn't the only part of opposite attraction (though that's goin' in the ship defense arsenol, that is) Mai and Zuko aren't really opposites. Any (other) Zutara shipper who reads this will come for my blood, but Mai and Zuko are much much more like two halves of the same whole. They have a lot of character similarity and they could mesh very well. They could also annoy the crap out of each other, but that's a moot point.
I know Mai is a cool character, if for nothing other than she's shrouded herself in a layer of mystery. And she's not afraid of Azula. Any future she and Zuko have together comes down to that very significant detail. I can imagine Azula forbidding Mai from any relationship with her brother and Mai just telling her to shove it. Whereas Ty Lee is (with admittedly good reason) terrified into obedience.
A boyfriend could be just the thing Mai needs. Seriously, the girl spent a lot of time in a dark room chucking sharp pointy objects at a wall (and they call ZUKO emo?!?!). The girl needs companionship.
I for one will feel cheated if we DON'T get the nice juicy angst on Zuko leaving his home and country. There is so much room for story there.

I'm thinking that Mai may be telling ZUKO to go shove it--when it comes to Azula.
"You always listen to what your sister tells you?"
"....um....yes???"
"Well, now, THERE'S your problem!" [/withthesameattitudeassomeonesayingthatth ecomputerneedstobepluggedin]
Well, Zuko's no better...he was no good with knives before he left, but he threw knives quite well in Blue Spirit garb....and he got good with those antique broadswords....sheesh, they both need a real hobby.
Was the "two halves of the same whole" meant to be in reference to Zuko's one line?
We'll have our first taste of interaction in....nine days. Twelve days for the actual meal.

Lol that too. Though I'm fairly certain all of us are taking that attitude/tone with Zuko these days.
To be fair, Zuko didn't have much else TO do except work out and train on that ship of his. He doesn't seem the type to like sitting still and playing strategy games with his uncle.
Now you mention it, yeah, they do need a hobby...hmmm Zuko hates playing the Sungi Horn and he can't juggle for beans and he's utter crap at fixing roofs...
hmmm they're both demigothic and easily classified as emo...maybe they should take up Poetry I know, I know, I know, diving straight into stereotype but I bet they could dig into the confines of their poor dark misunderstood selves and spout the most soul stirring words if they tried (WHAT?! One of my majors is creative writing... I like poetry and the literary arts
).

Hey, me, too!
Unfortunately, if Mai was the poetry type, she wouldn't be looking for something to do outside....she's more of the intramurals girl.
Zuko's also the athletic type....I hope we see the two of them in a sparring match of some sort. Heh...maybe the creators will set it up at the start of an episode like they're breaking up or they've just lost it with one another, and then show that they were practicing.....
SO WANT TO SEE THEM WORKING TOGETHER!!!

LoL Well, jocks can be poets too! (sneakily points to Sokka, last person in the world I'd have pegged for being good in a haiku slam)
One of my absolute best friends was quarterback for the football team, some good position or another on Lacrosse team, and one of the best poets in our school.
Though I do really wanna see Mai and Zuko practicing together. That would be something awesome cubed.

And then Mai "injures herself", and asks Zuko to kiss it and make it better, and Zutarians everywhere yell indignantly, "THAT'S CHEATING!!!" and I join in just because it kinda is.....XD
Zuko strikes me as the type of guy who would find himself making rhymes at some point and unable to stop and then completely freak out about it.....

LoL I'd chew through my left arm to see that scenario happen-with any of the ships I like.
Yeah, he doesn't seem like the rhyming sort of fellow, but some of the best poetry doesn't rhyme at all

Like Azula's speech to Long Feng during "Crossroads of Destiny"! THAT is poetry....well, maybe not, but....
Actually, Mai's first line is bordering on poetry. "There really is no fathoming the depths of my hatred for this place."
Then....
"I thought my life was boring back in the Fire Nation, but this place is unbearably bleak...nothing ever happens."
Well, that one not so much, but....he first one.....
There really is no
fathoming the depths of my
hatred for this place.
Five, seven, then five

Oh my Goth! It works. It definitely definitely works.
And yes, Azula's words were poetry. She's good with words. But that girl is good with everything. I wanna find something she's not good at...and then rub her nose in it...

This isn't advance critique, but I'm gonna say it anyway:
Zuko you jerk! First Katara now Mai!
OK, so very good! I like it so far. I like the last 3 panels. I can almost see that in a movie (or a TV show) the slow zoom out!

Yeah, I deliberately went for that effect....after posting this, I considered that maybe I could have had a similar shot like Zuko's choice in "Crossroads of Destiny," but I'm fine with it the way it is....
Katara was a bit of a...different situation. More of Song....

Thing is, he's never had a girl who's actually interested in him as he is.
Only one girl has ever been interested in the prince of the Fire Nation, and she's the one who gets first dibs on the snog....Jin's was a peck.

Great job! I like how Mai gets smaller and smaller in the last couple panels. But I do have one suggestion: you should have Zuko wearing the outfit he wears when he leaves (hair down and hooded cape).

Very good on perspective and drawings...
Advanced critique, though...
Panel 2, the poses don't quite inspire me...I honestly don't have a suggestion, but I think there could be something more there, maybe a bit of Zuko's face visible...
And Panel 5, I would personally have Zuko walking straight away from her (IOW, if he did a 180 and walked, he'd bump right into her), and have him farther away. Alot more suggestive visually and metaphorically...
But good work!

Points taken....
Fifth panel is another one of the direct references, though....I'm reluctant to change it....second panel, yeah, I got lazy. XP Gotta fix that up.
Farther away might work for the fifth panel, though....
Thanks!

What, the first time? Not her place, not her job, a little too overly dramatic, it would have been improper, overdone, the creators hadn't conceived her character role yet, she wasn't that attached to him back then, no time, no proper motivation, no will, the list goes on.
Ah, my old "make things overly dramatic" days.....
