Description The wolf pack of Langedrag Naturpark in Norway: [link] Tragically (thanks to the persecution of the sheep farmers*), these are some of the last wolves left in all of Norway. One of the wolves shown here was wandering the wild, all alone (his family had probably been killed), and actually showed up at the gate of the wolf enclosure, begging to be let in, so now he's a part of the pack. Had there been any other local packs left in the wild, he would have joined one of them instead of venturing this close to mankind, but for him, the only alternative was to be forever alone, which he obviously couldn't bear. It's sad to see him captive, but at least he'll be safe here, and can live out his natural life span. (Photo taken by my hubby ~sayh .)

*The sheep farmers blame wolves for their lost or killed sheep, but there simply aren't enough wolves left in Norway to do the amount of damage they are claimed to do (there are maybe a dozen of them left in the wild). Most of the lost and killed sheep are hit by cars, or are stolen by people, because the farmers let them wander all over the mountain roads, without any fences or guardian animals to protect them whatsoever.

Way ago sheep farmers! you all suck!!,i feel bad for the last wolves in Norway why cant farmers put fences around their sheep?? its that simple! why cant humans hunt themselves!!! sometimes i wish Predator was real! cause he only kills people that are very mean!! so the hunter(humans that hunt wolves or other animals) becomes the HUNTED! see how that feels!

If the farmers kept tabs on their sheep, they would know. they should keep closer watch.

Nice shot. I'm not going to rant like I was preparing myself to do xD

I just love rugged landscapes like this and the neutral colors are gorgeous. You would never think that this was taken in a captive setting. Beautiful shot

-eats humans-

I hate joo! Die wolf killers!

I WILL EAT YOU ALIVE IF YOU DARE HURT WOLVES.

Wolves mean so much to me, I'd die to save one if I had to

And they totally belong in the wild, guys, so think twice about buying wolves - or any wild animals- as pets.

I just hate it when people say someone they know owns a wolf/tiger/lion/whatever whether it's a lie or not.

It makes me so mad when people shoot wolves because they think of them as "pests". Wolves were in Europe/the Americas/Asia first, folks. Llamas and draft donkeys are much wiser choices when it comes to protecting your livestock. Beautiful photograph, they blend in so well with the landscape!

I'm overjoyed that "Shoot 'Em From Choppers" Palin resigned from office in Alaska, she is a raging moron.

That's so sad that the wild wolf recognized he was better off in captivity than in the wild

Poor thing! Do you also have wild dogs? in central Europe these are the main cause of seath for sheep.
I always feel so sad, just today I heard that a wolf was going to be shot dead here in Switzerland because he attacked sheep.
It drives me nuts that people can't make a real effort to change, it's so much easier to claim "damage money" rather than keep dogs or donkeys to protect their sheep.

I never even read about these things as it puts me in such rage everytime and it's pointless.

A donkey will protect sheep from wolves? I've never heard that, before.

It's sad that the lazy, cheap attitude you describe seems to be universal, but it's also kind of heartening to know it isn't JUST Americans who are that way.

Llamas will protect them as well, if raised with them. And yeah, it's much easier for the farmers to just blame wolves and then collect the damage money from the government for missing sheep then to go to any means to actually protect them. Many sheep also die from illnesses, falls and other predators, because they basically run wild until they are all later herded up and sorted, according to their ear tags.

Well, that just goes to show that ALL nations need to stop paying ranchers for these losses.

Yes donkeys are very protective of their "pack". But you must only put one otherwise they stick together and don't seem to care about the sheep. From what I've heard (through my colleagues who work as wolf specialists here) a donkey can fight back a wolf easily, the wolf won't take any risks with the hoofs.

A donkey and a couple of these huge shepherd dogs is enough to keep any wolves away, but these are not fully reimbursed unlike the damage done to sheep, so a lot of shephards prefer this.

Very cool. I always liked Donkeys, but I didn't know they were so feisty. I know they CAN kick really hard, but I didn't know they'd stand and fight a wolf.

Yeah, these payments need to stop.
