APPEARANCE ⟹
If she were to ever stop crouching, Kelp would look much like a winged, fluffy squirrel. She has wings perfect for flying quickly, and the flaps of skin between her arms and legs allow her to glide when flying gets too tiring. Kelp looks very fat or muscular but is quite the opposite. She zips through large crowds and can squeeze past tight spaces with ease due to her thinner, small body. Her tail, unlike the usual squirrel’s, is flat and used mainly for turning in flight and while gliding as if it was a clump of tail feathers. Her ears are tipped with short feathers and her beak is long and thin, perfect for abducting small crustaceans out of the sand near the bay she lives near. Her claws are hooked, perfect for scaling trees quickly, and her cheeks are large which gives her a very innocent and child-like appearance.
Kelp is a dark gray-brown, her upper body looking like a kind of saddle and being a darker brown that fades into the rest of her body. Her underbelly is white, and like a sandpiper, there are flecks of white along her back. From her flying squirrel half, there are stripes on her tail and flank, which are the darkest brown-gray on her body. Her eyes are black. She is commonly seen wearing a necklace made of thin rope with three blue beads on it.
PERSONALITY ⟹
Kelp has grown to be very helpful, considering the absence of her parents and large family. She easily juggles the needs of her siblings with room for more, and always enjoys assisting customers who can’t decide on something to buy, or helping one of her many cousins with something around their home. It’s just something she does without thinking, really. She is very generous when it comes to things, such as giving out any surplus crops to customers at her family’s fishery or feeding wild animals when she comes across them. Kelp thinks that everyone should have something nice, and even if it’s temporary she’s willing to help that become reality. She might look the other way if someone plucks from her beloved blueberry bushes, though she would prefer if she was just asked instead. She is also very polite when she can be, not wanting to pick fights and instead trying to remain on avus’ good sides. She smiles, uses her manners, and even gives gifts to her closest neighbors when she can. She doesn’t like being stern or rude. It simply isn’t in her to do something of the sort.
She is a very clear extrovert, as one could tell by the traits above. However, not all of her family feels the same way about her giving away surplus food to strangers and blabbing on and on about their farm. She can sometimes scare other avus when she suddenly appears asking if they need help with something, her camouflage and large black eyes making her easy to miss at first. It comes across as her trying to be nosy or condescending when really she’s just trying to make friends. Kelp is extremely devoted to her family and job. She wakes up extremely early in the day just to get things ready at her home or water her crops. Sometimes she doesn’t get more than a few minutes of sleep because her rather large house had been messed up during the day and she spent the night trying to fix it. She tends to be rather relaxed during the day, but that’s only because she’s so tired of acting like a parent for her ten siblings. While she claims she ‘always has room for more!’, she really doesn’t. She often finds herself forgetting what she had to do and accidentally neglecting her own needs due to helping someone else. She cleans until the end of the day most of the time, and occasionally finds herself falling asleep while flying. The only time she gets a break is when her parents come home for a while, but really- when are they ever there?
Kelp can tend to be oblivious, and it plays into her childish nature. She doesn’t always notice when something is happening until it’s too late and tends to miss social cues. Kelp really doesn’t mean to be like that, but she’s so distracted by everything else that she can’t stop to focus on just one thing. She truly is stressed but is very good at hiding that fact. Taking care of everyone and being sleep-deprived isn’t good for her health and she knows it, but thankfully she is a relative of one of the Rainforest kingdom’s herbalists and knows some good teas to help calm her down. Due to her lack of a proper childhood, Kelp had to grow up quickly and didn’t get to be how normal fledglings were. She spoke very primly and proper, but nowadays she acts much like a young, naive child. Since there’s nobody to judge her about it, why not have fun now that she has so many things to worry about? Though, she does have trouble differentiating between reality and a game sometimes.

BACKSTORY ⟹
NESTLING.
As a nestling, Kelp often found herself alone in their large, lavish home. She hatched first out of the pair of eggs she was laid as and found that her would-be-sibling had failed to hatch at all. Her parents came home to feed and care for her, but then they were off on another one of their fishing trips. The stumbling critter learned quickly that calling out for her parents wasn’t of use unless they were home, which was usually only twice a day since they were convinced she could feed herself on the fish they brought home. She survived, which seemed to become a crutch for her parents to use. Her aunts and uncles would occasionally visit her while her parents were gone simply because they thought it was irresponsible to leave a child so young on her own. Her neighbors were more commonly caring for her, and seeing as.. Well, she was nothing more than a moving worm at that point. Her parents failed to realize that.
FLEDGELING.
Once Kelp became a fledgling she saw her parents even less often. She was convinced for a while that they had abandoned her, but the company of her many older relatives kept her relatively content. Still, she couldn’t help but long for her parents to just.. Act like parents for even a while. She found herself getting lost in tidying up the house of spoiled foods her parents lazily brought back for her to eat, and tending to the few living berry bushes they had.
Then her mother returned to lay two eggs. Kelp was told that she would have to care for them while her parents were gone. Her? Taking care of these two, tiny eggs and herself was such a challenge! Still, she did as she was told and read the little eggs stories and did her best to keep them safe. When her parents did come home, it was almost always to care for the two eggs and very rarely to say hello or chat with Kelp. She was entirely jealous of the attention they were receiving, having to resist pushing them out of the way and taking the attention for herself. She couldn’t play around anymore, and the fact that those two eggs were so oblivious of that made her angry.
Once they hatched though.. She had to drop all of what she was doing to juggle the constantly bickering pair. Her parents didn’t even bother giving them names. They fed them, did the bare minimum, and left again. Where were they even going? Kelp would have followed them herself if she didn’t have more important things to do. She decided to call her younger siblings Squid and Octopus, and every week once her parents came home she would pressure them into giving them actual names. Alas, they were fine calling the two Squid and Octopus. Taking them to school along with herself was quite difficult.
SUB-ADULT.
Upon becoming a sub-adult, Kelp promptly apprenticed herself under one of the closest farmers. She decided that it was going to be a skill she needed considering that she now had two more siblings. Mollusk and Clam were very calm, and Squid and Octopus were willing to help Kelp take care of them. Kelp helped with the food and basic necessities, and Squid was very happy to teach them all about how great he was for helping them clean up. Octopus more or less was there for emotional support, really. When Kelp did see her parents it was only because they were coming to check on how their excuses for maternity leave were doing. Kelp never liked how they only took care of the youngest, but at least they seemed to care to an extent.
Soon after Mollusk and Clam began attending school, Seal, Shark, Tuna, and Lobster were hatched. Kelp didn’t know how much more of this she could take. She was the only sensible adult-ish figure in their home, as Squid and Octopus were too bothered trying to prove that they were the better sibling in the house. Kelp had to juggle everyone’s requests, along with her now growing army of crops on their farm. Squid had taken a liking to fishing, like their parents, whereas Octopus preferred helping her sister in the garden. It had taken her almost all of her time every day, but it seemed she was getting the hang of caring for her now eight siblings.
Kelp began taking them out on family outings that the bay nearby their home, which is where Shark discovered that they wanted to be one when they grew up. It took all of Kelp’s willpower not to leave them in the water when they refused to come out, but eventually, they cooperated.
LEGAL ADULT.
Able to completely evade fighting in the war by being both an essential worker and also taking care of now ANOTHER child, Kelp stumbled back into the habit of taking on everything at once. Her routine was simple, really! It didn’t help her that Squid and Octopus were now worrying about being 'drafted' due to their lack of jobs and nearing the age of adulthood. She tried convincing them to farm with her if they wanted to stay, but they were rather.. Reluctant. Instead, they decided that they would rather fight in the war than get their hands dirty with mud. Kelp found herself worrying about her younger siblings. Often enough that her favorite sibling, Shark, began noticing.
They convinced her to leave Mollusk, who was definitely old enough to take care of everyone if she tried hard enough, and go for an outing with Shark to simply relax.
It did the opposite, of course. Shark took her someplace where they could watch the sunset and was ambushed. They had managed to slink into territory that was being scouted by some unruly Gryphus and had to quickly evacuate and run home. However, Shark had received a wound on their gliding membrane during the scuffle while they were trying to find someplace to hide, and that was when Kelp vowed never to let herself be so absent like that again.
SOCIALIZED ADULT.
Once the war was seemingly over, Kelp hoped that she would see her parents more. If anything, she saw them less. She was angry, though now that her family would be safe without her constant watch, she loosened up. A bit. Squid and Octopus returned and, with their now less-pish-posh attitude, squirmed themselves into their aunt’s fishery. Particularly with shellfish, which they were exceptionally good at catching thanks to their nimble fingers. Everything was going fine, but Kelp knew it wouldn't last. She knew better than to let a false sense of security like that happen again. She attended the Peace treaty’s signing and was horrified to find that Zinnia had died. Quickly, she pulled her siblings away from anything out of the Plains or Rainforest, faster than the borders closed.
She made sure that nobody would leave her sight and sent everyone capable of doing so to learn the basics of important jobs. Hunting, farming, all of the sort. Just as quickly as she loosened up, it was all lost. It made her siblings annoyed with her. They didn’t understand why she was so dedicated to keeping them so sheltered.
And quite frankly, neither did she.

RELATIONSHIPS ⟹
FAMILIAL
Omg there are so many so I’m just gonna.. Categorize them
Kelp is polite and kind to her parents, though she doesn’t appreciate how they make her take care of her younger siblings as if she was their mother while they go out for weeks at a time.
Kelp adores every one of her younger siblings. She has to stop Squid and Octopus from fighting quite often, though. Shark clings to her like she’s his mother, and she has become very protective towards them and her youngest siblings.
Kelp doesn’t mind her aunts and uncle. No strong opinions on them.
She loves each one of her cousins and is very inspired by Minnow’s success. She is content being a farmer, though she can’t help but feel inspired when she sees her.
Sweven and Periwinkle are also very high on her opinion list. She finds them cute.
