Description With time comes improvement, and that was just what my SDJR 7F sprite got.

Arguably, the first image which comes to mind when one mentions the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway would undoubtedly be its 7F 2-8-0 locomotives. These machines were built out of sheer necessity for the line's steep gradients which the engines currently used could not cope with, therefore, James Clayton, the chief draftsman at Derby Works, designed a 2-8-0 mineral engine which incorporated many aspects of the Midland Compounds, using the same boiler with a belpaire firebox and walshaerts valve gear. Everything about the 7Fs flew in the face of Midland Railway practice. After the line was inherited by the LMS and Southern Railways, the LMS ordered five more from Robert Stephenson and Company of Newcastle, these being fitted with larger G9BS boilers, though two were later fitted with the smaller boilers of the 1914 batch, the remaining three being reboilered in the 1950s. The 11 members of the class were used for heavy goods and mineral trains, though some were also used on the famous Pines Express which ran on the Somerset and Dorset. All of the class was withdrawn by 1962, but two are preserved, both currently operational.
