Description The Great Reformed Church of Debrecen (Debreceni Nagytemplom) stands in Hungary's second biggest city. There were a number of churches here before the current version was built, in the neoclassical style, to be finished in 1824. During the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 (one of many revolutions in that year), Lajos Kossuth declared the country's independence here. Debrecen was, during the period of 1848-1849, Hungary's capital, until the revolution was squashed by troops from Austria supported, according to the terms of the Holy Alliance, by Russia.

The Reformation was quick to establish itself in Debrecen, where the Catholic faith was absent between 1552 and 1715: Debrecen gained the name of "Calvinist Rome" due to its churches, institutes and dominance of the Calvinist faith. The Great Reformed Church is one of the largest of its kind, able to hold 5000 people. A monument to Kossuth stands in the square as well.
