Description
The landscape of Wadi Rum (وادي رم) as seen from underneath a natural stone bridge. Wadi Rum (the name means 'Valley of the Romans'), also known Wadi al-Qamar ('Valley of the Moon; وادي القمر), and famous for its rock formations. The translation 'valley' for wadi is only an approximation, since a wadi is technically a riverbed which is filled with water only occasionally: however, it is important to note that this arid desert-scape can indeed be transformed into a river. Wadi Rum has become famous too for its association with Lawrence of Arabia, who passed through it numerous times during the Arab Revolt in 1917-18, and who described it eloquently in his account.
Wadi Rum is still inhabited by the Zalabia Bedouin tribe, and lies in the south of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan (though parts reach into Saudi Arabia). It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
