I'm actually starting to like the finale now, if only for the sniping ammo it gave me (specifically, getting Koh to subvert that asspull lion-turtle thingy). Inasmuch at it set the tone for Maiko post-series, the finale also highlighted Zuko's nasty proclivity for leaving the people he "cares" about to rot in prison - that's the sort of empathy a war-torn, recovering world needs from its leaders!

Personally, I think he was just pulling a NewTrek!Spock. ("I'm showing empathy. I thought you'd like that." "...No, not really. Not this time.") That'd be my reaction, anyway. Then again, I'm not trying to make the world better. (Although apparently under Zuko's reign, steampunk happens. So maybe he doesn't suck. Or maybe he got deposed right away.)
Either that, or "peace and love" is a really awesome euphemism, and five minutes after his coronation there's a bunch of firebenders goosestepping to "Springtime for Hitler."
