Description
Can you imagine mixing a whale and a crocodile? Well, we have a mosasaurus. Some large specimens existed, such as Tylosaurus, one of the largest mosasaurs, it could reach 50 feet or more in length.
Its body was long and streamlined, with four paddle-like limbs and a long, powerful tail.
Some mosasaurs have a torpedo-like snout for ramming and a long row of deadly teeth for tearing and crushing.
Like modern snakes, it could flex its lower jaw to swallow extra-large prey.
Mosasaurs had impressive designs for life in the ocean.
Mosasaur bodies were long and streamlined, with four paddle-like limbs and a long, powerful tail that swung from side to side,
like a crocodile's. When about to attack, their tails gave the mosasaurs a burst of speed,
allowing them to ambush unsuspecting prey. The front fins would steer, while the rear fins would probably stabilize.
As reptiles, mosasaurs have to come to the surface to breathe air.
So they have nostrils near the top of their heads. But life in the water presented another challenge.
These sea-dwelling reptiles, like plesiosaurs and ichthyosaurs, are not true dinosaurs because they are not land animals.
However, these creatures are often included in books about dinosaurs. In fact, their long, slender bodies suggest they swam with a serpentine motion; in fact, they were a species of "sea serpent", and in fact, they are believed to be more related to snakes than to dinosaurs. The first mosasaur fossil was found in 1770, and the famous French anatomist Georges Cuvier studied it in detail.
Without a doubt, one of my favorite marine reptiles of the ancient world!!!
