I resisted using the from the Superman insignia. From what I understand, it was never Trademarked and people use it all the time in advertising. I did ask DC for permission to use it, but they never wrote back, so it wasn't deployed. The 'S' I used was from the Vivaldi font. You might recognize that same font 'S' being used in yet another logo I created (soon to be posted).
