Description Taken from the Bald Hill Opal Fields, Lightning Ridge, N.S.W. on the 23.3.13 at 10:25pm EDST

After a decent lull weather-wise it was very nice to see a storm crop up from a fairly stable trough moving across the Eastern states of Australia. I shot out as fast as I could, met up with good friends who were already shooting and set up next to them to enjoy the show.

Lightning activity was furious and I barely recall a second where this thing wasn't flashing away out there. Structure was very stable and highly organised in both these cells (two separate updrafts here only joined by the anvil) also having the nice inflow band evident as the dark cloud band at the lower area of the photo. Very suspicious looking Wall Cloud hidden under there too!

A little tricky to balance this out at times due to a very bright Moon overhead.
It remained quite distant from town. At this stage it was about 80 Kilometres to the South East and rapidly moving away.

It can get highly addictive after a while. Everything else takes a back seat once I know storms are in our area -particularly if they are within range of photographing

Awesome shot. Love the reflection of the lightning in the water. Amazing clarity, really it doesn't quite look real!

Thanks for the kind words!

No water out this way, just an endless distance of dry land. I can see how it may look that way to some though

Ah, OK now I understand, the lightning is going through the cloud bank to the ground--sorry I didn't quite get that the first time around. But still, a wonderful shot!!

Top shot man! I swear you can see under the RFD cut of that cell if you look hard enough. Surreal lighting

Cheers Evan!

I had a careful look at that in the full res shot. It does look very interesting. It was a very organised and long-lived storm. Would've been great to be just behind it near that updraft base. If only it was twenty miles closer it would've been amazing!

Hope all has been well

Thanks John!

This was a sneaky storm that I almost missed out on. It was just too distant to hear any thunder (over 25 Miles away) so it was only due to the fact I noticed flashing out my window that I realised it was there

At this late point in the season I'll take everything I can!

Thanks very much Doug! Still great storm potential over here so hopefully I can offer up a few more images before we start to get the cold fronts that end the season

Hope all has been going great!

I'm loving this MkIII so much. The images in full res are crazy. I've had fourteen shots printed recently on 20x30inch canvases (about six from the 5D) and they are just spectacular to see hanging up.

Thanks kindly for the comment as always
