for Anime Weekend Atlanta art design contest...

The theme this year is Japanese academic traditions. So... in Japan, most schools have field day once a year (early summer or mid fall), in middle and high school it's more common to split teams up by classes (some school take all classes and split them into two teams, red and white)

the race that's going on in this scene is the "pan-kui" race, where you would try to grab a (traditionally red bean) bread without using any hands and run to the finish line.
