Description I started this in...2009? It's now 2011 and it's actually wearable. ( bare in mind I haven't been working on this 24/7 ) It isn't finished however; I wanted to turn it into a T-shirt, but for the mean time I've kept it as this so I can wear it at Uni.

Once finished, I'll work out how many rings I've actually made. The wire is 2mm gauge galvanised steel garden wire

I also need to make a gambeson because this thing leaves chainmail pattern indents in your shoulders and chanmail patterned bruises when you're wearing a bag.

I used metal hooks ( that I did not make ) down one side so that it's tighter around the figure.

Do not redistribute.

I can't put my hands on my hips because they slide off when the rings revolve? D: it's heavier than a stab proof vest? It makes me look like an A cup?

.. I can't think of anything positive to say about it other than I love it and it looks badass xD

Wow, I actually forgot you were working on this. Looking good so far. God thing it's galvanized steel, those have a hard time rusting.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Tabon In reply to Hyric-the-hunter [2011-10-12 15:37:15 +0000 UTC]

yeah xD though unfortunatly it's galvanized with Zinc. But I don't know how much is actually toxic.

sgainbrachta In reply to Tabon [2011-10-13 16:57:58 +0000 UTC]

Not really an issue, unless you intend to dance in a really hot fire. Just drink milk and eat dairy products while you are working it- that'll lock up the excess zinc. Of course- you could put it in a vat of concrete-cleaning acid, until the bubbles turn mostly orange- then rinse it well. No more zinc! Of course, say hello to rust, then...

Tabon In reply to sgainbrachta [2011-10-13 17:21:03 +0000 UTC]

damnit D: no dancing in fire?!... really hot fire? Do you get cold fire too? xDD dairy.. curious. Unfortunatly I'm an avid bodybuilder and altering my diet is rarley an option xD but thankyou! I'm hoping that wearing some under padding ( when I make it ) will keep it off my skin and I'll be alright. I wont be wearing it too much anyway because where I'm living right now is very hilly, and, it's not the kindest of things towards hiking hills. One day I will do it like the knights!

sgainbrachta In reply to Tabon [2011-10-14 00:56:46 +0000 UTC]

You really can't absorb enough through your skin- so don't worry about that. Heck- I carry 80+ pounds when hiking, so that little shirt shouldn't be an issue! And I'm a sponge. AN OLD sponge, at that! ;-P

Tabon In reply to sgainbrachta [2011-10-14 08:55:15 +0000 UTC]

sgainbrachta In reply to Tabon [2011-10-14 14:08:09 +0000 UTC]

usually more of brass, steel and lead. And some food-ish stuff, and rather a bit of cloth in various forms... I do World War 2 reenacting, and usually carry a BREN gun- a light (HAH!) machinegun. No jeep, so it's sole-leather express, all the way.

I have been making galvanized steel chainmail since I was 14 and when I health issue came up I had full blood work done and there was no trace of metals in my system. The stuff you are working on is extremely safe.

On a side note if you are looking for a faster way of making the rings check out my page.

Tabon In reply to LTgoatRoper [2011-11-27 08:16:22 +0000 UTC]

Good to know! And yeah, I'm aware of winding jigs, I just never bothered to make one xD I just used what I had and started with, which was some screwdriver thing. Also good because it was portable, so I did some coil making while on the bus or around people's houses. However that wasn't very kind to my hands or wrists in the slightest.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

LTgoatRoper In reply to Tabon [2011-11-29 04:35:31 +0000 UTC]

I use a screwdriver on occasion but I only use it for the jewelry sized rings. Bead shops sell this great stuff that is easy to work with and looks great too the only problem with it is that the wire is too soft to make anything large.

Have you ever considered using aluminum electric fence wire? It is high quality, light and easy to work with.

Tabon In reply to LTgoatRoper [2011-11-29 07:16:46 +0000 UTC]

I haven't really, no o: what gauge is it normally? If it has a standard gauge.

I have some premade goldy/silvery coloured jewelry rings that I plan to use for one of my small creature sculptures.. I don't know why I didn't think about making it myself. I suppose at the time I was mostly accustomed to using what I had because I wouldn't get to go shopping often, but now I'm at uni, I'm accustomed to buying what I need. So I guess I'll walk into the city before I go home and get thin wire and all that.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

LTgoatRoper In reply to Tabon [2011-11-30 04:04:14 +0000 UTC]

The gauge that I use for jewelry is 16, other common sizes are 18ga and 20ga but the smaller you get the more ridged you need to keep the wire. I have considered using surgical steel for smaller projects.
