Xen is actually a series of large floating islands, that has a inner core with a gravitational pull, and an outer shell which it's magnetism repels the islands, thus keeping them in place, without floating away. the Islands are assumed to be meteorites with the same rock types as found on Jupiter. how aliens such as headcrabs and vortigaunts inhabited them without any resources required for life is unknown. But there is a guess that air got stuck in the gravitational pull from planets that no longer exist, and created an atmosphere. that's all I know so far.
