These are indeed strings of parasols hanging in a huge (cedar, I think) tree. It has such a fairy story feeling to it that I was instantly loving this event!
More from this shoot My images from the Beppu Sentoumyou festival (1,000 candles, I believe) in Beppu Park. We arrived early and were able to get some good shots before the sun went down, and then many, many more of the handmade lanterns and art displays around the park.
