Description
Guess what viewer, it is now MY BIRTHDAY!and to celebrate me being another year older, I've decided to draw a fan-art image from a show that i watch roughly ten years ago...
the subject, why less realistic than Jurassic park/world, was still fascinating to me for it allowed the designers to REALLY get creative...
this tv show goes by the name of "Primeval!"
The idea behind this series was there were these "anomalies" which were strange doorways in time to different parts of the earth's world's very long history....
often-times, an episode would feature a creature from some point in prehistory, like a dinosaur, a mammoth, a giant carbonfious insect or even a synapsid.
But since episode 6, the producers of the show had found a way of mixing up the formula (as to not run out of obscure prehistoric animals so fast)
they added in that the "anomalies" not only lead to the distant past, letting in extinct creatures, but can occasionally lead to the distant future, letting in animals the like of which the world has literally not seen.
now whenever the future animals of primeval are brought up, people normally think of the demonic-looking bat-descendant called: "The Future Predator"
But that is not what my favorite creature is...
no, my favorite creature of the future comes SEASON 2 EPISODE 4, when the team is trying to find out what kidnapped a young man named Lucien (and later, one of their own team-members Abby) and what they find, is this creature...
a semi-aquatic marine mammal from some unknown point in the future, with huge canines, forward-facing eyes, large muscular arms and a large set of rear-flippers...
It is called the "Mer Creature" and although at first glance, it looks like a vicious seal, the details that I've explained seem to indicate that is, in fact, a type of marine primate species, one that simply adapted to life in the sea and replaced the seals in their niche.
that is pretty in itself but what is even cooler is the possible place by nick cutter, that they may somehow be a distant descendant of us humans!
if that is the case, then it is third "post-human" species to be used in pop-culture...
(after the Eloi and the Morlocks)
but with all that said, I hope to have a great birthday...

1-I mean i like how you drew the creature, it looks like it has a human like face, he almost looks curious.
2-I remember watching the first episode on youtube, the artropleura was creepy...
3-I really like the creatures they created, sure a lot of them were inaccurate, and maybe a little crazy, but i loved them.
4-I like the mer creatures to, but out of all the creatures, which one do you think is the most weirdest and freakiest?

1- indeed, it's kinda cute.
2- that was the second episode.
the first episode had a gorgonopsid
3- true that is a good saving grace perhaps...
but there are a few cases where the inaccuracies are just too many, like the crusty, crocodilian "mosasaur" for example
4-depends on your definition of "weird"...

1-He kind does, dosen`t he?
2-Really? i learn something new everyday don`t i, thank you.
3-That`s true, and if you want really good example of primeval`s inaccuracies, the draco-rex, it`s looks like something out of the medieval ages!!! kinda ironic, in my view.
4-I mean like behavior and appearance, for example ever the "Camo Beast"?, it`s a humanoid creature that can chemically change it`s skin, abby`s sketchbook suggest the creature could be a descendant of chimps or other modern apes, maybe us?

2- you're welcome
3- welcome, actually the Draco-rex was that bad, just remove the odd sails and it looks fine...
4- looks like a gremlin, doesn't it?

3-That`s true to, and i actually kinda like the spikes and detail they gave it, and the future predators were just AWESOME.
4-You know, they could`ve inspired the myth, picture this, an anomaly opens in a a plane flying in ww2, a camo beast appears, and the rest is literal history....
5-I liked how they did that sometimes, having a prehistoric or future animal inspire myths and legends.

3- I won't deny that, so creepy and mysterious
4- perhaps...
5- i will admitt that was sort of cool, but then there is the problem if the portals happened so often, wouldn't evolution get really screwed up, like what a sizeable group of small dinosaurs went to 55 million years ago, wouldn't they take over and effectively cancel the dinosaur extinction?
think about it, a small raptor species culd stay in the cenozoic and evolve to be one of the biggest predators around.
like this-img00.deviantart.net/dfa1/i/20…
that one portal could accidentally erase humans from existence, just like that, or worse...

3-I like the babies, they look cute for me for some reason.
4-Indeed.
5-Yes and no. yes that will happen, but it would`nt affect our time, you see, if raptors came to the cenzoic, then anything before the point they entered, like the met-riot hitting the earth, mammals taking over, it would still happen because time moves on, otherwise it would be a paradox, now if they went back to the point when the left, then that point in time would become it`s own timeline
6-So that one portal could not erase s from existence, the past, is the past, time moves on, change is constant...

3- from a certain angle, any baby animal can be cute
5 and 6-if that is the case, then why did Helen cutter try to kill the first hominids if it wouldn't effect the present?

tyyrson In reply to Taliesaurus [2018-01-25 22:21:10 +0000 UTC]
3-That`s true.
5 and 6-Whetever she used could`ve been eaten by bacteria, they discovered bacteria eat oil and plastic.
7-If anything she created an alternate timeline, because she interfered with that point in history, anything that happens after that point will not happen.

5 and 6-yes but not chemicals
7-well it doesn't make sense why they'd try to stop her...

tyyrson In reply to Taliesaurus [2018-01-25 22:39:31 +0000 UTC]
5 and 6-Then what did she use the kill them?
7-Maybe they originally thought that was gonna happen.

exactly, since the mers live in a lifestyle like seals

I feel like their entire appearance may have been a subtle nod to the descendants of humanity in Galopagos.
it's too bad that after the Mer, only two other hominids showed up (to my knowledge)
-a band of Australopithecines (never came through the Anomaly, antagonist instead went back in time to prevent humans from ever evolving via poisoning)
-a medieval knight

Taliesaurus In reply to PrinceStaghorn [2018-01-25 20:32:51 +0000 UTC]
1- i think that was the inspiration, along with these creatures-www.sivatherium.narod.ru/libra…
well, given how diverged it is, would you really call the mer a hominid?
what did you think of the knight?

PrinceStaghorn In reply to Taliesaurus [2018-01-26 00:17:42 +0000 UTC]
geez, the pics in Man after Man are creepy...
Given how diverged it is, would you really call a chicken a Maniraptoran? my point is that it is (or is implied to be) a descendant of humanity, so would technically be a hominid, albeit a new branch on the tree. This does beg the question of how diverged humanity has become at that point... are there other post-human species beyond the Mer?
He was an interesting situation, given that up until that point the team had been dealing with basically animals (as we have no basis of measuring how intelligent the Mer or Future Predators were), so having to deal with a temporally displaced human offered up a unique challenge.
👍: 1 ⏩: 1
Taliesaurus In reply to PrinceStaghorn [2018-01-26 09:53:48 +0000 UTC]
true, fair enough
i'm just saying that the mers are hominids in the same way pigs are related to entelodont.
indeed it questions the mortality of human sentience

PrinceStaghorn In reply to Taliesaurus [2018-01-26 16:46:43 +0000 UTC]
hmm... alright, fair enough on the hominid argument. I know that no matter what, they're definitely not in the same genus as humans anymore. If they aren't hominids, then at least they're a new class of hominoid.

Happy b-day!!! talie!!! congratulations!!!! *thumbs up and claps*
I now the show too, i just LOVED the dinosaurs and animals they shown, my favorite includes the future predator, raptors, draco-rex, diictodon and aby`s rex, he`s so CUTE!!!!
I believe the mer-creatures are possibly eusocail, i came up with this theory because of the lager red female compared to smaller males, though it could just be an example of sexual dimorphisim.
I would suggest making more like this, like your dinosaur asset files, but with primeval animals.
*plays birthday music in the background* "Happy birthday to you happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear talie, happy birthday to you!!!"
Happy Birthday.

1- thank you *bows*
2- indeed, but clearly stylised
3-I believe it is the other way around because it is not common for large mammals to do that.
(though not implausible)
3.1-but that does make me wonder, why did they kidnap abby and keep her alive if they were not going to eat her...
3.2- what else did you like about them?
4- maybe but the problem with that is....unlike Jurassic Park, a lot of primeval's premise doesn't make realistic sense, and the animals from the past are supposed to be the "real-thing" whether as Jurassic park had a proper reason behind being inaccurate. (you can see how primeval doesn't always age well in that regard)
Not to mention that if time portals happen so often, then why isn't all of evolution completely messed up?
as well as several time paradoxes in the show that somehow result in small changes instead of BIG EVOLUTIONARY CONSEQUENCES!
(take the end of season one, that somehow resulted in Claudia Brown turning to into Jenny Lewis, it is really confusing how that is the only major difference)
look, I like this show, but stuff with time-travel like that, is really confusing and hard to explain, you're talking about having to go through so much confusing situations and figure out why something didn't happen when other things did. The reason why I showcase the animals of the JP universe is that they are not so frustratingly confusing, they have a good design reason that help their animals to age better and because the only stretch is the mosquito thing, it is really realistic and doesn't require enormous leaps to comprehend.
do you understand what I'm saying?
5- aww thanks...

1-Knoe problem. *fists bump*
2-Yeah, but he`s cute none the less, i`d love to have him as a pet.
3-Are you sure, mole rats eusocail, why not primates, and if you look up on primeval`s wiki, the big red one`s called "Mer Queen", course i could be wrong.
3.1-Maybe they were curious about her, or maybe it just is...
3.32-I like how their an example of evolution at it`s best, one day humans are the dominate species, mastering technology, philosophy and spirituality, is no reverted to nothing but these simple beasts.
4-I guess, but honestly, it`s all just bones, it`s only recently that we understood pre-existing organisms, plus there`s an artist named pristichampsus that makes primeval art too, and also if something from the fuure enters a pre-exsting timeline, that timeline is no longer connected to the future timeline, for example, if you went bak in time to the dinosaurs, the timeline of the dinosaurs is no longer connected to the future timeline, though somerhing from the past will stay connected, it`s only when the past thing is back to it`s timeline, especially if at the point when it left, it created an altered timeline, the time frame changes, but i`ll admit it is complicated, i understand, though it is an interesting plot to think of....
5-Your welcome, how much older are you today?, got any plans?
6-I like how you designed it, to me the face almost looks, human...*knods head*

3- because they exist in a niche lifestyle like seals.
3.1- *shudder* let's not talk about that...
3.2-it's quite poetic if you think about it.
4- I never said it wasn't interesting, just that if I was to showcase it, too many things don't make sense...
5- trying to think about what to mention on the gallimmus

tyyrson In reply to Taliesaurus [2018-01-24 20:46:29 +0000 UTC]
3-That could work, maybe the mer queens are like what beach masters are to elephant seals.
3.1-Who knows....*creepy misic plays in the background*
3.2-It is is`t it, but who knows, maybe theirs a future for us...
4-I wasn`t saying that either, i was explaining how time travel works, ever heard of terra nova?
5-How about this, "True Ostrich Mimic" describes how gallimmus acts like an ostrich, being very skiddish, though when forced will aggressively kick with their powerfully strong legs.

3- perhaps...
3.1- uh oh
3.2- indeed, what you think is you million great grand-son looked like this...
4- yes, but apart from the cool dinosaurs (most of which were made up) it fell flat on it's face.
5- perhaps, but I mean what ingen would have noted about their specimens
