Description
I met this guy through a friend. He has great bone structure but he's in a bad way through Heroin addiction. I set up one light and the result is not posed in anyway, it's just as it happened.Related content

26 days clean? Good for you, you should be proud of that. most people think, 26 days, pfft, that's not even a month, but for an addict, that's amazing, that's like a small eternity.
God, the days always seem so LONG when you're getting clean too. Hope you're still doing well.
I won't give you any shit for your comments, I get it.

It does. Β It definitely does. Β I just passed my four years now. Β It's funny how this one piece of art has gotten to hear my updates year after year even though I've long been absent from dA. Β It DOES get easier in fact, to the point that it feels like a life I never even lived because i'm so detached from it now. Β AND. Β It also feels so much different that the initial upset that I had toward this deviation years ago no longer exists in me. Β I'm a greatly different person. Β I rarely think of that life and only tend to when the anniversaries come around. Β Thank you for your support and care <33

Do you have any experience with heroin addicts? The gentleman concerned receives a great deal of treatment from qualified medical practioners, I'm not sure how you think I can help him "exit" his addiction. This guy has to shoot up every single day and one way or another he's going to find the money to do it. This day I paid for it, maybe, just maybe it prevented another person from getting robbed on this occasion. Addicts, especially heroin addicts will go to extraordinary lengths and do things they would never consider if not for their addiction.
I know one thing for sure, whether I bought the gear for him on this occasion or not, it would not have made one iota of difference to his addictive state. To suggest that there is something I can do to help cure this addict, a man who's been addicted most of his adult life, is at best naive.
As for paying him the drug, I gave him money, he paid for the drug. Give money to a heroin addict and that's what there going to spend it on. I don't know what else you think I should have paid him in, a heroin addict is only interested in one thing. I did however severely question my motives after this shoot. The guy is in a bad way and I gave him extra money when we had finished because he's totally destitute. I know exactly what the money will have been spent on. That charitable gesture will also have been used to fuel his addiction, they are very difficult people to help.

You have to realize though, until he's ready to deal with his addiction, there's nothing you can do. And in doing what you did, paying him for the shoot, you saved him one more day of suffering through unbearable sickness. It's almost merciful, like euthanasia or something...

I could only imagine. Mixing art, photo journalism, and the far edges of humanity all in one. I guess he would be focused enough though that he would basically ignore you eh?

Talkingdrum In reply to OregonArtTeacher [2008-12-18 15:11:02 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, he was only focused on getting his fix. He did say though that he would half the fix and shoot it up in 2 goes (he'd normally buy a fix and shoot the whoile thing in one)so I'd have a better chance of getting a shot, after that I hardly think he noticed I was there.

Wow, so he was at least somewhat considerate to the artistic implications of the shoot. I am so glad I never got within a mile of that stuff.

Me too. I've seen people inject before but never a hardened addict. It took him so long to find a working vein and when he eventually did the blood shot out. Instead of having people go round schools giving lectures on drugs they should pay addicts to go round schools and shoot up in front of school assembley; I think that would guarantee any kids that witnessed what I did that night would never go on to do it themselves.
