What's not to love about exploring ancient crypts? Gorgeous rock walls, stagnant air, fluffy spider webs and, of course, friendly locals.

A bit of a rushed piece for #halloween2023 , but I'm still somewhat happy with the result. The astute scholars among you may have noticed that this is a redesign of an incredibly old piece I did exploring some concepts for the kinds of large and monstrous creatures my characters could encounter in the deep and forgotten reaches of the world.

Barrows, crypts and other tombs very often have protective charms and wards to deter the unwelcome living. A select few house the remains of a figure so important, or so powerful, that it's protectors are willing to commit the unspeakably vile, and unbelievably dangerous, act of creating an amalgamate creature made from various bones and held together with rotting sinew, partly intact muscles and the magical equivalent of duct tape. This construct is then given false life by trapping a wisp or other spirit within. A wholly immaterial creature often goes completely mad when made to experience a corporeal existence, and combined with a need to consume the flesh and souls of the living in order to sustain the enchantment you get a rampaging killing machine. Prevented from leaving the tomb by powerful runes and wards, the beast prowls the halls and tunnels mindlessly searching for the next spark of life to consume.
